Substantially better book. Still a nice movie.
I love Nolan but I have never liked swords and sandals movies. Should I go see it?
The movie doesn’t interest me. But then I stepped back and considered; is there a single Nolan movie I haven’t at least enjoyed? And the answer is no. And many many of them I’ve considered brilliant.
So seeing it Saturday morning.
He and Villanueve have earned that.
I’m far from convinced I’ll enjoy Odyssey - as a huge history nerd, basically every costuming and set design choice in the trailers puts my teeth on edge. But I do want people to at least keep trying to make ambitious films like this, rather than going back again and again and again to squeeze the last decomposing juices out of the corpse of Star Wars, so I’m going to see it next week. Hopefully the actual plot etc makes up for the visuals.
I listened to the Iliad and the Odyssey on Audible. I might have a squiz.
Just came back from seeing the Odyssey.
Absolutely fantastic
Takes a little while to get going at the start, but after that it moves along at a really nice pace
Loved all the practical effects
Score is really good too
For me, it’s Damon’s best performance
9/10
With all the grizzles about Nolan casting a black woman as Helen of Troy, I’m wondering WTF Helen has to do with the Odyssey. She was a key figure in The Iliad but the afterwards?
Homers Odyssey starts from the end of the seize of Troy
Yeah…saw it this arvo. I now appreciate she would have been involved when Telemachus went to see Menelaus to see if he knew anything of Odysseus. She had such a minor role that it’s clear that Nolan cast a black woman as Helen as big FU.
I had a recollection that there was a big bed that Odysseus had built before heading off to Troy that had a big part in the story but no mention. And I really did get a massive bug up my nose when Telemachus called his parents Mom and Dad, rather than Mother and Father which wouldn’t have upset anybody and probably far more likely (if indeed any part of the story was true).
They skipped through three of the troubles very quickly but I suppose that stopped it being a 5-hour movie.
Besides all my petty criticisms, I’d give it a 9.7. Got to lose marks for the Mom and Dad.
This was jarring to me, just felt weird and out of place. Especially because later he did say mother and father
In the first instance, was he asking if one of his friends could have a sleepover?
I get a similar bug up my nose when DA is used when European shows are dubbed. Everyone has different ways and the method used is very different where the Napoleonic Code is in force, as it is in much of western Europe. We’d use DPP, England the Crown Prosecution Service, Scotland the Procurator Fiscal.
Every time I’ve reached that point with actors and directors I end up disappointed.
Nolan hasn’t disappointed me yet. I’m there opening night everytime he has a movie out
He has surpassed Spielberg now as my favorite director of all time

That’s right, out of an olive tree.
I’ll go see it on the weekend hopefully
The grunting noises being made by the suitors trying to string the bow will be used as sound clips whenever they need a clip of a bloke trying to winkle out a tough Henry the third.
Could do with a comma or two buy not sure where.
No comma needed. But definitely a bed needed in the Odyssey.
I’ll have a look at it next week. I’m not expecting much.

As long as they put “The Scream” in there somewhere I’m happy. With any movie.
In fact some movies are only worth watching to spot when it appears.
Nolan hasn’t disappointed me yet.
Oppenheimer did my head in. His other stuff is so good though.
Is that the “wilhelm scream”. If it is, I’m with you. Love whenever it comes out
Bingo
