Double Fantasy…the Lennon songs, great…the Yoko songs…had to skip. No talent whatsoever in the singing caper. She must have been dynamite between the sheets.
Nomadland. Probably the best movie i’ve seen in a long time. McDormand is a powerhouse, although much MUCH more understated than her oscar baity (although still terrific) performance in 3 Bill Boards… Maybe the best individual performance by an actor since Toni Colette in Hereditary. The cast of what I can only assume to be mostly non-professional actors are also terrific. It’s a masterpiece of direction. I’m now going to watch everything this director has done.
Out of curiosity what makes you say that 3 Billboards was Oscar Bait material?
Oscar bait roles are typically sympathetic characters that have very obvious character arcs, and 3 Billboards seems far from that.
To be fair, I said ‘baity’, not really obvious oscar fodder really when I think about it. But the performance was very ‘Loud’ but then so are all the characters McDonagh writes. She nailed the performance. I prefer how underplayed this role is. It think its much harder material to make work. It’s really a knockout.
I personally thought all the characters in 3 billboards were very unlikable but still had redeemable features. Suited the tone of the film in my opinion.
Will have a look at Nomadland.
Agree on Toni Collette, she was outstanding in Hereditary.
I loved The Little Things. I thought that Leto was pretty damn good in it…his Character is creepy as f
was flicking through the channels the other night and ‘Alpha’ had just started on SBS.
It’s set during the Ice Age - a young guy is left behind by his tribe after being injured presumed dead, and he has to find his way back home. Makes friends with a wolf who is also left behind by their pack after being injured.
Goes for about 90 minutes, and is on SBS On Demand til 24th Feb. Nice little movie! Lead actor is an Aussie too
Saw that a couple of years ago. The language used in the movie was invented just for the movie.
I happened across a little movie called Results on SBS World Movies last night that I liked a lot. The only actor I’d ever heard of was Guy Pearce, who plays the owner of a gym who’s truly passionate about healthy living, etc.; the female lead was someone called Connie Smulders, who plays a personal trainer who works at the gym, and the main support was Kevin Corrigan, who plays a client who’s unexpectedly become extremely rich. It only gets 5.4 on imdb, but the user reviews are divided between those who liked it a lot and those who couldn’t stand it. The director was Andrew Bujalski, who’s completely unknown to me and has directed half a dozen movies that I’ve never heard of.
It’s basically a romantic comedy. It’s a quiet, understated little film of a type that I didn’t think the Yanks knew how to make: there are no big scenes, there’s no slapstick, there aren’t really even a lot of jokes; but I watched it all with a smile on my face. It’s not a great film, but it’s a very good one.
There are only about 3 films in there that I’d be interested in watching and I’ve seen them all already. The Verdict is one that belongs in the Underrated Movies thread.
This has probably been mentioned before but I watched Yesterday this week & really enjoyed it. Plenty of comedy & genuine feel good moments.

Thanks @Koala, watched this after work today, was good and the scenery was magic.
In lockdown again, will have time to watch some of the other movies recommended.
Just watched The Last Full Measure on Netflix, directed by Peter Fonda. Thought it was fantastic
“A Pentagon lawyer reviews a posthumous petition to award a war hero with the Medal of Honor and discovers the shocking reasons behind its denial”

Thanks @Shelton10 . Watched this last night and really enjoyed it too. Guy Pearce is great- he’s played many brilliant roles over the years. The female lead is Coby Smulders best known for the sitcom How I Met Your Mother.
For all of those who have never watched The Sound Of Music, now’s your chance. 7Flix.
Watched JoJo Rabbit on Saturday afternoon, the young boy was fantastic. A little gem of a movie.
I have this on Video, but I don’t have a VCR so have been watching clips online.
Almost my favourite Australian movie.
