I re-watched The Matrix for the first time in ages.
That movie is still cool as hell, in that it is so pitch-perfect for the time it was created. The internet was all phones and mysterious and authority should be questioned and Rob Zombie was cool and leather and trench coats. All so so good.
Also made me acutely aware having re-watched the original Star Wars trilogy recently, that The Matrix sequels share the same problems as the Star Wars prequels ā they answer questions that were more fun left as questions. I didnāt need to see Zion and I didnāt need to know what The Force was, those were things more enjoyable left to the imagination.
Totally agree with all that.
Man, the Matrix sequels were so, so bad, that they actually detracted from the legacy of the first one. If that was left at just one movie, it would have been universally known as āelite.ā (although there are elements of the second one that I think were underrated. The third one was poo.)
Same for me, the second one was 2 hours of setup for the final one, and the final one sucked.
Saw Foxcatcher on the weekend. Great performances from Tatum, Ruffalo and Carrell. Carrell is almost unrecognisable. It is a very good film but if I was going to be picky (and I am), the film was a tad long and couldāve been benefitted from some tighter direction and editing.
Also saw St Vincent, which was very enjoyable. It is quite sentimental but just manages to not become maudlin or sappy. Nothing exceptional about the film but it is well made with good performances from Murray, McCarthy and the kid who plays the boy.

I dont remember ever actually seeing the first one.
I remember the first, in glorious stereo at Chadstone. Rolled in early to get primo seats (before tickets were allocated but after the previous time they were allocatedā¦) and about five minutes into the film a bunch of teenagers rolled in expecting my friend and I to move because otherwise they couldnāt all sit together. Poor little poppets. I told them to ā ā ā ā off and get a watch.

Monica Belluci is the only reason to watch 2 & 3. Otherwise, as others have said, they simply serve to make the original far less cool.

hahahaā¦love it!
Last week, my partner and I went to the movies. Now, Iām a little particular where I sit, which is why I either go to allocated seating cinemas, or, get in the door very early. Anyway - We get to our two seats, and thereās this guy and this girl sitting in them. Iām nice and all, and let him know he is in the wrong seats.
Soā¦he gets up, and proceeds to say in a very loud voice āthere are THOUSANDS of seats in hereā¦!!!ā
I said āyeah - so go and find one unless you want a sceneā.
He goes āalright, chill!ā
āIām really really āchillā, manā I say.
They left.
I hate self-righteous dicks.
I enjoyed it. You have to get past certain cheesy hollywood bits - but what hollywood movie doesnāt have them, right?
Excellent performance by John Goodman (he doesnāt star in it) and Jessica Lange (she doesnāt either). Wahlberg was ok.
Ahmā¦some people wonāt like this movie, as it is more of a āheadā movie than what the previews would suggest.
