At the movies

Just watched Brothers with Tobey Maguire, Jake Gyllenhaal and Natalie Portman…it’s been sitting in the cupboard for a year or more and I finally got around to watching it.
Thought it was an excellent movie…the performance of the little girl who played the eldest daughter was brilliant.

Yeah. Underrated film.

One of Will Ferrell’s better ones.

It seems Ferris Bueller hooks another generation with my kids giving it the thumbs up. I watched it with them, its still an engaging film.

Big hero 6, good watch.

birdman, boring.

I loved Birdman, was never bored.

Couldn’t get into it, stopped halfway.

Just watched Heat for the first time in 10 years and wow what a film! Easily one of the best heist films ever made. Combining an all star cast with Pacino and De Niro headlining, both at the tops of their games.
I was prompted to watch it again after reading how Christopher Nolan used the film as inspiration for much of the action in The Dark Knight and you can easily draw parallels. In fact, I don’t think I’ll be able to see Dark Knight in the same light any more. The action sequences in Heat are masterful in their realism and intensity.
There’s enough twists and turns to keep you guessing and the characters are quite multi-dimensional.

Just a great film from start to finish.

8.5/10

I’ve never taken to it either.

Going to see The Theory Of Everything next week. Nice and deep sort of film.

Eddie Redmayne will win the best actor Oscar for his portrayal of Stephen Hawking. His transformation is truly amazing.

Can’t disagree on that.

Genuine tear-jerker for me and easily the best movie I have seen in years.

If you stopped halfway - shouldn’t you just be giving half a score?

Saw Kingsman last night. Loved it. If 2015 has a movie in store that oozes more cool factor, I cannot wait to see it!

Yeah, I really found it entertaining, despite getting a bit silly at the end. Colin Firth maketh the man.

Most of it was pretty silly, but absolutely fantastic at the same time.

That church scene was amazingly shot.
Love Firth.

Birdman is great. The running time flew by (not a pun).

Keaton is a shoe-in for the Oscar.

I saw Birdman on Saturday and liked it. There were moments when I felt like getting up and walking out, but every time I got to that point something happened to hook me again. I didn’t actually find Michael Keaton’s performance as good as many others have done; I was always conscious that he was Michael Keaton acting a part. Ed Norton was great as always, and the other supports were all excellent too.

One thing I liked a lot was the cinematography. Normally I hate the hand-held camera, but in this film it was much steadier and therefore easy to watch than normal. The whole single-take thing was done extremely well, so well in fact that it was hardly noticeable unless you were looking at it, and quite unlike the film a couple of years ago set in the Hermitage museum in St Petersburg which actually done all in a single take and was almost unwatchable. The colours and lighting in Birdman were really spectacular too.

I have no idea what the film all added up to in the end and I suspect that in fact it didn’t add up to all that much, but it was a fun ride.

Ha you are totally David Stratton you big beardo.

Honestly, of the five nominated films I’ve seen I’d have ToE dead last.
That is, below
Birdman
Whiplash
Imitation
Sniper

And I’d have Redmayne near last as well.
If people think he displayed any sort of emotional range in that film then I don’t know what they’re watching. Cumberbatch gave a better performance and that guy basically has one look.

I just can not bring myself to watch yet another movie about someone with a disability as the star.

Was “Simple Jack” the last straw?

I do quite a bit of work with disabled. Although it is usually for good intentions, I just don’t like seeing academy award runs using disabled.
