AUS SLOP

team’s still sht, and the circles the coach chat goes round in are getting increasingly smaller on every lap. time for a new simmo thread.

today’s topic is inspired by watching have you been paying attention the other night. i might just be getting older and cantankerous, or it might be the calorie deficit, but that show is going downhill. same people rehashing the same gags.

but i feel it didn’t really go in the what annoys you thread, because it didn’t annoy me. i just felt kind of dreary. and so it’s inspired a new area of thought - aus slop

aus slop, like ai slop, is something that doesn’t bring joy or anger or cringe - just a sense of ennui, an “oh, this again”, but that’s very specific to life in australia.

at the very top of this list - the aussie aussie aussie chant. well overplayed, but not to the point of ire. just elicits a sigh. next is pete helliar, as inspired by monday’s tv viewing. did bevan the musical, strauchanie, and then nothing notable in the 20 years since but he’s still on the telly. and thirdly the phrase “not happy, jan” used unironically in a workplace setting.

submit your nominations below and i’ll decide if it goes on the list or not

Saying/yelling “taxi" when someone spills/drops their drink, stumbles or otherwise does something unco after a few bevvies.

It was barely funny 20 years ago now it is just cringe/lame.

a nomination that is well and truly in the spirit of the thread, but he’s inspired too many differing emotions in people recently to be aus slop

And personally, I’d include Essendon FC at the moment.

Whether we win or get belted it’s meh.

When we do something dumb off-field it’s “oh yeah, this again".

100% this. Wanker behaviour.

My contributions:

Bunnings sausage sizzles. They’re just bad. Really bad. And no, you don’t need a lukewarm one at 9:45 on a Sunday morning.

Coffee snobbery. Yep, we make good coffee in Australia. Get over it. So do other countries. Also, stop trying to pretend the hole in the wall you go to is somehow curing cancer every time they grind a bean and therefore far superior to the hole in the wall your mate goes to.

great shout

specifically when said by americans

you’re getting too ranty here, which suggests mild emotions. not for this list.

that said, i am going to add democracy sausage. not the actual availability of them, just that specific phrase being touted as a feature of elections.

Mick Molloy.

90’s Mick Molloy? Sure. Big fan. But maybe that’s because he had terrific chemistry with comics far more talented than him (Sitch, Martin etc).

These days? Very lucky to have a job.
