Of course it was good, only an insane culture wants guns in every household. It’s interesting that his only positive legacy was a monumental example of big government restricting individual agency. Of course they only ever say they’re against that sort of thing.
Removing semi and full auto’s from the general population was absolutely a good, logical outcome.

I just remember pay phones being 40 cents for a local and now I can call on them for free. And get free wi fi from them.
I call anywhere on the planet for nothing with WhatsApp too. International calls used to cost a bomb
The NBN is the new Telstra. The government sold at the right time.
Some privatisation is ■■■■. But Telstra isn’t the right example imho
Hahah, oh yeah, those were the days.
Run out of mobile credit, use home phone to call, rack up bills at 20c per minute. That landed me in hot water a few times.
Now, call and text are basically just free add ons and it’s just pay for data.

FARK OFF!!! It was the “aspirationals” that he appealed to. That is NOT Boomers.
Maybe it was both.
I had a GF in the Howard era whose dad (most definitely boomer) told me Johnnie was the “best PM we’ve ever had”.
Incidentally, when I was living in Townsville with said GF in around 2004, we were dining with my uncle and aunt at an upmarket waterfront restaurant where a friend of ours was a chef. Howard happened to be there too, and stopped at our table to say hello on his way past. There were handshakes between the men and when my GF offered her hand to Howard he completely ignored it, and her, before walking away.

The small bore clubs are of no worry to “society”, imo.
And I see no problem with Frank O’Reilly’s being in the “inner North”
No problem either.
I just was ‘blown away’ when I found the two local shooting ranges, and my local gun shop. They’ve been there decades, and just non descript, not really hurting anyone.
I imagine if Australia had a gun fetish problem they’d be pretty popular, but maybe polarising.
Luckily for us, Australians don’t really have a need to be hyper pro gun ownership.

when my GF offered her hand to Howard he completely ignored it, and her, before walking away.
Wouldn’t have happened if Scomo was there
His son is an MMA fighter. Won on the weekend.
Tim Wilson being touted as Smokey for leader or deputy leader.
Fantastic idea.
Put him in a poison chalice position, knife him, and that unpopularity leads to him losing his marginal seat. Again.
I don’t like Tim Wilson, but I do acknowledge he’s done really well this election. On that basis, he’s surely smart enough to not even put his hat in the ring at this point in time.
Could be an option for deputy
Deputy is a bit less risky, sure. But I very strongly suspect if there is a mid-term leadership change, it’ll be built on a message of needing a clean slate.
So both leader and deputy could cop the hit.
So the small bore clubs were usually given leases on railway (Crown) land - Fairfield, Northcote, Camberwell, Eltham, Sandringham, Brunswick etc - back in the 30’s and have been there ever since. They’re all indoor 20mt ranges and usually in pretty poor cosmetic condition these days. A few have had difficulties getting their leases renewed with some (unfair imo) local opposition. Once upon a time they were considered an important component of the Australian civil defence strategy, teaching citizens how to shoot and maintaining an understanding of firearms safety, maintenance etc that could allow a fairly rapid deployment of a moderately competent militia - most could already shoot , between the country upbringing / rifle clubs - with a relatively small standing army. The 39th Battalion ( Civilian Militia) for example fought critical encounters on the kokoda track that ultimately prevented Japanese invasion of Port Moresby.
Of course, they make far less sense in that capacity these days. Warfare has certainly changed, though if the ■■■■ ever does hit the fan I’d much rather have a competent percentage who can already shoot. But the derision of firearms owners today overlooks some uncomfortable truths in my (biased) opinion. Particularly those in the target shooting sports, which are highly scientific , disciplined and are chasing extreme precision and perfection.
And I’ve taken us way off topic .
The need a metro deputy, who else is there, Hastie?
Julian Leeser? Zoe McKenzie?
Guess it depends how you define metro.
I agree there.
But I disagree with privatising electricity, water and gas. And maybe public transport and am torn on the need for tolling roads. And definitely things like land registries.

The need a metro deputy, who else is there, Hastie?
Hastie will probably wait for two yeas, and build his profile in a non defence shadow portfolio. Then maybe takeover before the next election or just after. I suspect they will give him shadow Education, Health or even housing. He needs to soften his image so he’s not just “the army guy” and a mainstream portfolio will assist.
