Yes but not at all relevant to the actual succession of PMs from Menzies to Gorton, which was what the discussion was about.
It started off with a Senator able to be PM
He was. He had to defeat the ALP incumbent Lindsay Tanner, and Liberals were eliminated ahead of ALP so he didnât get any ALP preferences. Bandt was third on first preferences, a narrow 0.68% behind the Liberal candidate, and picked up enough prefs from random minors (Family First and Citizens Electoral Council! as well as Democrats) to get ahead of the Lib candidate and then collect their preferences to pass Tanner.
Correction to post.
So, Bandt didnât beat the ALP incumbent, but won the seat after Tanner retired ( and Tanner later imposed himself on us as unelected Essington President )
Given Gorton was replacing Holt, there happened to be a handy vacant safe seat in the RepsâŚ
He was also honest and realistic. He used his own vote against himself when the vote on the motion of no confidence on him was moved by Billie McMahonâs mates
He was a fighter pilot during the war and wasnât a Menzies type and was liked by a lot of ordinary Australians and obviously wasnât a toff.
I think you have your PMs jumbled @bigallan.
Menzies (Vic), Holt (Vic), Gorton (Vic), McMahon (NSW), Whitlam (NSW), Fraser (Vic), Hawke (Vic), Keating (NSW), Howard (NSW), Rudd (Qld), Gillard (Vic), Rudd (Qld), Abbott (NSW), Turnbull (NSW), Morrison (NSW), Albanese (NSW).
A lot of lacklusture New South Welshmen in that roll call!
Higgins electorate, the jewel in the Lib Crown, abolished at the last election. Katie Allen was the last incumbent, one of the non corporate lawyer professional Libs. Sad news about her diagnosis,
Thats what she said.
Whoops that was the wrong election.
But enough of a shitstirer to then stand for McMahonâs Deputy and win!
Keep your friends close etc.
Stage 4 bile duct cancer.
That is a truly horrible diagnosis. Very sad news.
I said he wasnât a toff and was liked by most Aussies, most of whom generally like shitstirrers.
I just got sequencing wrong on Holt taking over from Menzies, he was PM for only a short time. Fraser got to be PM first up without being elected as PM, but Iâll concede a few years of him as a Vic PM.
As to the Nats, at one stage in Victoria they just about ceased to exist after dominating with some sort of gerrymander favouring the Country Party.
She was the last Lib incumbent. Michelle Ananda-Rajah won it in 2022 for the ALP. First time theyâve ever held the seat. Sheâs in the VIC Senate race this time, 3rd on the ticket. Have heard sheâs in with a half chance.
She is popular with a certain type of person for a certain type of reason.
Sheâs hated by the vast majority of indigenous.
If she tries for the Reps, sheâll lose.
I hope she fails at every single thing she tries.
I just think the Greens touched a nerve siding with the cfmeu. Which is awkward for Labor.
I donât like the cfmeu in how they operate but I do agree with due process and can see through the hysteria. The greens however played poor politics.
And then probably on housing, sure they blocked Laborâs changes to force the real conversation which neither majors want to talk about.
Because itâs politically hard but necessary to address.
Sometimes good policy is like the baby being thrown out with the bathwater.
Iâm convinced that might happen with the Greens and it happened with Shorten.
But I havenât seen the qualities in any LNP policy just yet. I think what Nuclear can probably die a fast death.
The Libs had nothing else of substance to my knowledge. I liked their gambling advertising reforms on sport. Probably politically easy now Foxtel has been sold off from News Corp.
theyll parachute her into a safe seat of this is a move to get her the leader job. thatâs aasuming there is any safe seats left .
sheâs an open Maga lover, I really really hope they put her aa leader .
