Wouldn’t help in this instance though.
Best thing Keating done though was offload Qantas

eeeeeeeehhhh…
(for clarity, that’s pronounced “aiiiiiiir” and is accompanied by an unconvinced shrug.
In retrospect, I should probably have just typed “I’m not convinced”.
You live and learn.
Massive money pits if not operated properly and the vast majority of government operated airlines are just debt machines.
The Australian government get looked after very well by Qantas but when other airlines are involved then prices can skyrocket
Pity about the Australian taxpayer.
Maybe but $38000 for a 1st Class NY return is farcical.
Just like the land we paid $30m for that was evaluated at $3m.
See, no real accountability.
Or they could just fly business class on Qantas metal all the way for probably under $10k return.
With the amount of bailouts they’ve given to Qantas, they could have been Government owned.
Labor apparatchiks and hangers-on think IT’S TIME to follow the Libs and get their snouts in the trough.
Such wasteful spending and self-interest has historically been the first sign of decay and fall of governments.
Yeah. Like it’s not as if all these places don’t provide heaps of information widely on-line, let alone a plethora of web sites with reviews of those places.
Assuming there were no voter scare campaign that would destroy any government.
What would be the realistic chance Australia could ever introduce a resource tax like the Norwegians have?
Between that and getting rid of negative gearing, it feels like we could be living in a socialist utopia.
Economically, it’d probably make a chunk of sense.
Politically, there’s no chance. The coalition are in thrall to the big mining companies and wouldn’t consider it, the ALP see in the coalition’s self-immolation a chance to be in government forever, and have decided to govern in as inert and risk-averse manner as possible, making no meaningful reforms that might annoy anyone important.
Isn’t it a pity that we don’t have anyone employed by the government anywhere in the USA that could have taken a look for them and saved them the trip.
So are Labor.
Wells is going to be gone, they are trawling over all of her trips now and it doesnt look great. Shame , I think hse’s a decent minister but its amazing how many people think they are like royalty when they get comfy in politics
In addition to what HM said there is also the risk that the CIA would do what they did to the Whitlam government.
It’s definitely possible if done right. Norway has high marginal tax rates on profits but also significant incentives for exploration, including some cash reimbursment. Losses can also be carried forward for tax purposes. So the government pays out money during the early phases of a project, then only really cashes in during booms, but they REALLY cash in during the booms. To prevent the government having wildly fluctuating revenue they use a sovereign wealth fund.
We could do the same but there are a few problems. First, we have a lot of existing projects that would either have to be exempted from the new system or given tax credits for previous investments. Then the government would have to subsidise new projects, since that’s part of what makes Norway’s system work. We might look at ending royalties as well. And then we’d have to start investing in a sovereign wealth fund. So they’d be a period of years where the government is worse off. That’s going to be hard for any government to do while balancing all of the competing budget interests.
Why can’t we just build a highway through every mine site?
The difference is that the Liberals think that Mining is great for the economy, while Labor thinks it is great for jobs.
The Mining Industry know having two major Parties in love with them is very good for business.
