Certainly in the bagging area.
Prices are noticeably up, but what I find most infuriating.
Things are either full price (too expensive)
Then half price. Then 40% off. Then 30% off. Then $2 off. Then 2 for $7. Then full price again.
It seems like this all happens in the space of a week. Can’t things just have prices, and maybe a couple of things on special?
They tailor to traffic and circumstance. Pension day, dole day, Friday night, Saturday morning, affluent, poor, scarcity and need, etc. Years of studies, heights of cynicism, capitalism unregulated, think it used to be called profiteering. Yay.
Also choice, so much choice. Except that brand of cracker you liked just got replaced by a slightly cheaper and much inferior version under the supermarket brand. It’s weird.
They don’t want to give you a choice of items. That costs money.

The one I can’t cop is when you see a big promotion for “price drop”
Two weeks ago it was $6 they then put it up to $7.50 for a week and then with the price drop it is now $7.

It’s crazy how little choice you have at the big 2.
In North Fitzroy, there’s a supermarket called Piedemtes. It’s about the size of a smallish coles. I needed maple syrup, they had about 8 different kinds. Go to Cole’s and it’s one kind. You want pasta sauce, they have 20 kinds, and Cole’s has about 6, but just the entire shelf filled.
You can see why they do it. But it leaves the consumer with ■■■■ all to choose from.

This is actually illegal, Kogan gets fined for it every single year and pays out millions
The ACCC is too scared to take on the duopoly
yep in Tas tiny IGA’s have better selection of choices.
at coles for packaged goods it seems like its
full price 1 week
then 30% off
then 50% off
then full price again
just need to mix up shopping at coles / woolies.
online delivery pays dividends sometimes when they stuff up as well, last week got delivered 3 bags of groceries (in addition to ours) sunday night, they must have been getting ready for school lunches. Ended up with lots of extra yoghurts, raspberries, blue berries, watermelon meanwhile Pam would have had to go down to the store after not receiving part of her order.
I shop at Northies and go to Coles first buying what’s on special or items they stock that I prefer and then go to Woolworths to complete the shop. Always looking out for non-perishable items on special at both.

The ACCC are still crying after ANZ smacked the morons down
I think the supermarket thing is just a politician’s distraction.
While they’re focusing our attention on 1-2% inflation on groceries…the government is carelessly signing off tens-of-billions of budget blow outs.
The latest is that frigate budget that went from $30b to $45b to $65b. Now THAT’S how to do inflation.
Brad Banducci, CEO of Woolies, is ‘retiring’. Does it have anything to do with his walk off in the Four Corners interview?

When I was growing up there wasn’t a lot of choice. Then Coles and Safeway started ramping up into bigger stores and offering such a wide variety of options, choices, brands and flavours.
Now that they control the market they have just gone back toa couple of choices and one of them is their brand.
I do all my shopping online at Woolies except for fruit, veg or meat and I can’t believe the huge range of products. Reckon there was like 15 different shampoos and many other products had multiple options. Some of their branded stuff I actually prefer though
Yeah I think their aim is more online shopping.
MAXIfoods in Upper Ferntree Gully for the independent win IMO, huge selection and prices consistent (some up, some down) with the majors. Much better butcher section.
Online woolies shopping will die if they keep those ‘marketplace’ sellers results mixed in with their stuff. Can’t stand that. Bunnings does it too.
the supermarkets have a sort of bulk buy disount on a few things, but stuff like meat and fresh food, there is no discount whatsoever, why is this allowed?,
Becuase if you bulk buy non perishable goods you can store them. Nobody wants 4kg of apples that are going to go off.
