Australian Policies -- from December 2023

The Irish brides under the Caroline Chisholm scheme began arriving around 1850. There were reports of men at the docks bidding for a bride.

Iā€™ll take the bait, semiconductor chips, shipping routes and detecting nuclear submarine movements in and out of the south china sea.

But why does any of that really matter to us.

China is our major trading partner and things like semi-conductors come to us mostly in finished products made in China.

Shipping routes ? Well most of the shipping for us is to and from China, so why would Chinese interfere with that.

My crystal ball says that by the time we have these proposed nuclear subs, they will be probably redundant.

The World be both a very dangerous and wondrous place. I have travelled to over 100 countries in the last 50 years and have seen more things than most imagine, but I hold no fears for self destruction or for China trying to take us over.

If China does control Taiwan, what will change for us, and why should USA care. If there was any concern about the wellbeing of Taiwanese people, then USA show little regards for people in most other places.

The Great Debate: Wet Lettuce vs Limp Biscuit

Hey Albo - have you read this, pal ?

I think youā€™ve summarised it well. At this stage they will vote out Miles, not vote in LNP.

I think actually Albo understands the Law a bit better than you.

I suggest the issue is that the Hezbollah flag is prohibited, but the AFP do not seem keen to take action.

Why didnā€™t the usual ā€˜i want to keep pollies accountableā€™ types post this?

He should do, seeing he makes it - as long as Murdoch and Mutton agree with him. Anyway heā€™s more concerned with not upsetting his Septic bosses, these days.

As for the AFP -itā€™s highly debatable whether they have authority in the matter of waving flags at demos. Anyway theyā€™re a bit too grand for that - itā€™s always been a state police matter - and currently Vicpol at least are in no condition to be creating extra unnecessary work for themselves at demos.

And who actually prohibited the Hezbollah flag, under directions from the Seppoes ?

Russian and Belarus athletes canā€™t compete under their flags at international sporting events and their flags are mostly banned at those events. Itā€™s connected to Russiaā€™s invasion of Ukraine. Iā€™m not aware of any Government action to ban them, although there is discouragement of them being used because they might be provocative.
At a Sydney pro Palestine protest, the police removed someone waving the Israel flag, for his own safety.
Maybe Governments should try to discourage any flag waving. After all these are supposed to be about the civilians killed and injured in conflicts by warring parties.
ADD
If the AFP is being pushed to be creative in its interpretation of the law, it will end up in Court.

Yeah, thereā€™s a McCarthy under every bed.

How can they find any space there with all those reds already in residence there for the last 70+ years?

I am usually pretty rusted on alp as I never see any compelling reason to change , but Labor Queensland needs to be benched and the other side needs a go. last time under Campbell newman was a disaster , as they got in and thought they were being good money managers as they think they are born to be, by slashing 14,000 public servant jobs. I doubt they would make that mistake again. o feel like Crisafulli has put an anchor around his own neck by promising to reduce youth crime or resign. of course he wonā€™t and of course he wonā€™t .
liberals always think punishing people alone will fix underlying social and society problems thatā€™s why they never do.
but , saying all that, I donā€™t have a very high opinion that state governments. they donā€™t affect overall life a lot . they donā€™t make the really big decisions as much as federal do , and are just a step up from bin collecting councils . they basically manage money given to them by the feds , itā€™s all very important , but not as important as the really bigger level of government .
same thing will happen in Victoria regardless of how bad the alternate seems to be. government when in power too long needs a change and that is what will happen in both states .

In most ways State Government has a much more direct effect on our lives than the Feds.

For a start they control Education, Health and Public Transport. While the Feds supply money for roads, State decide when, where and how it will be spent, and State controls all Planning, so where you can live is also controlled by them.

And to be cynical, when was the last really big decision that the Feds made. Maybe buying nuke subs is a big one, but questions on tax, economy, housing, environment are all being neglected or have been for a very long time.

States generally only get about 45% of their funding from Feds, they raise the rest by screwing us over.

Yes, I agree.

The LNP deserve their chance. Labor have been a terrible government in QLD and should rightly be flushed. The people I think arenā€™t listening to them anymore and I think unless things change it will be a good flogging.

Over to the LNP most likely. I donā€™t regard them highly but itā€™s time for change and with the winds of change sweeping across the country with frustration over our governments broadly, I wonder if this is the first big ALP domino to fall, to be followed by the Victorian government next.

Kennet closing my school had a pretty decent impact on my life. Still resent that pos for that

If they donā€™t do much why does it matter they have been in power too long?

Simple reality, states make more decisions that impact on everyday life than the feds do.
