There’s been quite a lot of “this is affecting me and mine” in a couple of threads lately, stunningly from a couple of conservative posters.
lol turn it up
Labor MP Josh Burns has accused Opposition leader Peter Dutton of intervening during a press conference to prevent Liberal senator James Paterson from reading a statement in response to the attack on a Melbourne synagogue.
At the time, Burns had lost his voice and was at a joint press conference with Paterson at the Adass Israel Synagogue as a show of unity, following the arson attack on 6 December, which the Australian Federal Police (AFP) have since classified as a terrorist incident.
Speaking on ABC Radio National (RN) Breakfast on Tuesday, Burns said Paterson had agreed to read the statement on his behalf due to his inability to speak but alleged Dutton intervened to stop him from doing so.
“Unfortunately, right before we got on, Peter Dutton intervened and told James he wasn’t allowed to read the statement,” Burns told RN.
“I wanted to stand out with James and present a united front on this, and Peter Dutton decided it was more important to play partisan games than to allow my words, which I physically couldn’t speak, to be read out.”
His statement was instead read by Daniel Aghion, president of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry (ECAJ).
Burns praised the leadership of the synagogue for being “heroic and stoic” in the wake of the attack and said he wasn’t interested in “the partisan games or personal attacks”.
playing political games with this is ■■■■■■■ abhorrent
Burns hasn’t been a watcher on. His office was trashed, the synagogue is in his electorate. He is managing his own trauma while caring for people in his electorate.
I never said anything of the sorts. I tried to provide an insight into disappointment being felt. You can interpret it as you please but that’s what I’m seeing and hearing. It doesn’t change the fact that Josh B is a respected and much liked person within the community.
I bet you are.
Just make sure you don’t comment on anything Dutton is doing, because…um
That’s a similar story and feeling shared by my Jewish friends. They feel somewhat abandoned by the government. Their schools have extra security and that creates more fear for the kids at school and they feel uncomfortable when going to synagogue etc.
I too have had Jewish friends express their sense of being let down by not only a weak, narrative feeding, tennis playing PM, but also Dan Andrews. They’ve called me to speak about it, and how there’s not enough crumpets at Woolies right now. My Jewish friends are always at pains to remind me that they are Jewish, which is helpful to me, fyi.
ignored
I completely understand that the attack on the synagogue was a terrible thing to happen and should in no ways be tolerated. I also understand why Jewish people may feel under pressure as a result of the events in Israel. There are some sad people who have a hard time separating the actions of a governments with individuals who follow the same religion.
At the same time I was listening to Josh Fryenberg on the radio yesterday and I felt he was starting to come uncomfortably close to equating pro Palestinian positions or protests with anti Semitism.
Needs more top-spin
I think nearly all pro israeli conserviatives want any and all protests agiaint israel banned . Its not even a secret. Its their baseline isnt it?
See the cartoon Lawry posted, for ‘balance’. Although it doesn’t seem to be there anymore from a quick scroll
Guess you mean the Israeli Government, as along with Hamas they continue the conflict.
Nobody wants protests banned that’s not the anti semitic stuff people are upset and angry about…… but less nazi signs (some at protests) fire bombings, car vandalism in Jewish areas, doxing, offensive slogans, nazi salutes, death threats, offensive spray painting at local Coles and Jewish schools, offensive social media posts, hammer attack threats at Glicks, threats against Jewish schools, attacks on Jewish owned businesses that’s the stuff they’re concerned about. Police investigating online threats to members of the Jewish community would be welcomed.
So is protesting Israeli armed occupation in Gaza anti semetic ?
I agree, and while we’re at it less actual neo-Nazis at LNP rallies and appearances. They have felt so emboldened and welcome by the LNP and its race baiting, point scoring fictions, Murdoch screeds and divisive rhetoric that LNP politicians are genuinely receiving coaching in how to handle their presence at public events.
It’s just dreadful.
No I don’t believe protesting against the war should be banned. It’s not an occupation. Israel hasn’t occupied Gaza since 2006. The current military operation isn’t about occupying Gaza it’s focussed on eradicating Hamas and getting back the hostages. That’s just my opinion. Israel has no need to occupy Gaza.
the government has acted on the Nazi stuff, it’s illegal , the government doesn’t have a police force to enforce it. so apart from banning all the hate signs, and Nazi slogans ect , which they’ve done, they have just announced a federal task force , in under 3 days, so what else can they or should they have done ?
oh, should they stop calling for a 2 state soluution? . maybe that’s it.
I suppose in future if someone paints a Nazi slogan on a wall somewhere , the government has to declare that an act of terror in the same hour it happens or it proves they just don’t care
this whole coalition conservative narrative is as absurd as my last my last sentence
