Speaking for myself - significant pay increases in my line of work tend to only happen when you switch jobs or more rarely, get an internal promotion. And as a consultant/contractor/mercenary code generating object, I pretty much never have the chance to do the latter. Performance matters (along with a significant amount of luck) when it comes to avoiding getting laid off in one of the very very frequent cost-cutting rounds, but to turn performance into money you either need to change jobs or have the stars align.
Iāve been in my current job for 7 years. I started on a daily rate contract, 6 months rolling, and got no pay rise at all for 4 years, because thatās how things work for daily rate contractors. Then it so happened I got lucky and my contract came up when i was a very vital person on a very large project for my consultancyās most important client. I held them over a barrel that year and got 14%. A few months after that I had to go permanent (the client had a rule about the max time a contractor could work for them), and my new salary was in line with my updated daily rate. As a permanent, i got a CPI raise at the end of 2019, then nothing at all in 2020 (Covid the excuse of course), then CPI again in 2021.
Iām getting calls from recruiters from LinkedIn offering me over 40% right now. Whatās going on now is not remotely representative of how the market normally works, and itās hard to recognise whatās āreasonableā or not when things are so removed from normality.
With the support of the ALP.
I followed the SA one closely and could understand the change. Someone who had been charged committed suicide. He was unequivocally cleared posthumously by ICAC, should never have been charged.
Greiner had his IBAC findings overturned, but it cost him his political career. Once named in an investigation , a reputation can be shattered.
There was a cloud over a recent IBAC Prosecutor ( before Gladās time) - she was close to the police and it was claimed that she was selective as to whom to be charged.
The overall changes were poor IMO. ICAC can now only investigate allegations of corruption and not misconduct or maladministration and even then the pollies worked out a loophole
Yeah, if youāre not getting CPI youāre going backwards effectively, and good work for anyone who can maximise on a move.
Bizarrely I had a recruiter contact me via LinkedIn this week for an entry level role in my industry. A role I did 20 years ago. Do they even farkin read peoples profiles?
Even today religion can still be an important element in politics, not because of actual religious beliefs, but because of the social networks that it provides : it is worth considering for the insight it might give us. For example, look no further than Scummo and his Pentecostalist pals.
It was a problem for Bowen in McMahon, with so many voters practising traditional religious beliefs, sticking to their migrant heritage. Electorate had one of the highest NO votes in the SSM plebiscite. It is also anti refugee.
Sometimes people of good reputation running an Independent decision making body can let power go to their head. Institutions with powers over individuals lives need inbuilt checks on the powers of those running it.
Not saying that this was the case in SA, but beware the vigilante or bounty hunter ( look no further than Ben McDevitt)
Similar situation, although still a contractor, and similar story.
Unfortunately/fortunately I like where and who Iām working with right now and donāt feel the jobs quite done, so turning down some pretty decent offers to go āfull mercenaryā.
Even perm offers are looking ridiculous; one was +20%, STI, work from anywhere and 7 weeks!! annual leave. Spent a minute on that one.
