Australian Politics -- from 2022 Federal Election

And always bear in mind that there is not one indigenous voice, including in urban and between remote communities. There is diversity, including the interests of Torres Strait Islanders, who are not being given much focus in this debate.

Without more detail this referendum will bring out the worse from some sections of society.

It already has, see Twitter ā€˜votenoā€™

Certainly. I do admire her passion as an MP and note that itā€™s difficult to strike a good balance between that passion and diplomacy. But the balance is important, Iā€™d argue, for increasing broader community (and parliamentary) support. Then, maybe thatā€™s not a goal of hers - I donā€™t know.

From what Iā€™ve read, heā€™s only resigning from his portfoliosā€¦not parliament.

So he might lose a bit of salary but I doubt it will impact his capacity to get a pension down the track.

Stu and Marise are supposed to be power brokers in NSW Lib Party.
He was once seen as rival to Perrottet for Premier.

Everything thatā€™s wrong with our political system right there.

IMO they(crooked MPs) should be forced to quit.

From what I can gather governments donā€™t sack them because they donā€™t want bielections

Easy way to solve that.

Put into law whoever came second on a ballot and they are automatically given the seat.(Iā€™d probably make it primary vote given you can exactly have a recount perhaps years down the track of preferences).

Then give a judge the power to boot them. If it would change government - give the seat a bielection.

Governments have no power to sack an MP from Parliament, they only go to the cross bench when expelled from the Party, then decide whether to accept their vote, which NSW has been constantly doing.
Think Perrottet is a minority Government and no way would Ayres be expelled from the Party in any event.

So who has the power to expel an MP?(as in sacked from parliament)

The GG of NSW?

And if they have the power couldnā€™t some legal work just be done to install whoever came second at the last election?

Would save us all a lot of money.(less BI elections)

The idea that MPs can sit around in parliament when they arenā€™t fit to serve bothers me.

Would also motivate the opposition to uncover any wrong doing(because they may benefit from a sacking of a sitting member of parliament)

Too many Gā€™s there for NSW - states have Governors not Governors-General.

And AFAIK, even the Governor cannot expel a member unless they have breached a rule that renders them ineligible to sit in parliament.

Iā€™m suggesting that someone be given the power to do so.

I also think that pragmatically candidates be allowed a running mate if they donā€™t want to serve in opposition but havenā€™t done anything wrong.

Eg Scott Morrison. He wins Cook as the sitting prime minister but loses the election. Without a bi election he should have someone else from the LNP who can take his place if he chooses.

Save us all the time and money of bi elections or candidates just taking up space.

I think it would be perfectly fine to vote for a candidate and a ā€œunderstudyā€ so to speak.

Would make sense in other events too(eg Ill health of a sitting member).

If Chris Bowen lost his seat in parliament, he could start a new career doing stand-upā€¦

You need to be very careful with that sort of power or else you end up with a situation like the Whitlam dismissal.
