Australian Politics -- from June 2023

Without wanting to make too much of a generalisation, Australia is something of a Golgafrinchan B Ark.

We need to import people that do stuff.

We need to import people with scissors so they can cut the red tape and open up land supply.

The immigration ambition against a housing supply problem within an environment of inflation has to be the greatest example of the role of government conflicted by the need to make short term decisions to win elections.

Yet, the media don’t pursue it. They’d rather follow and write about things like The Voice. And governments (all sides) get away with it, as absurd as it is.

Was that new? Earlier reports after the Federal elections citing around this number were for projections of visa issues, not permanent migration, rather a catch up post Covid border closures ( including international students).

When the nmbers were first quoted, it was big in the media

It certainly would be…his electorate covers the south-west coast and the Western District, and Framlinghan is only 30-40 km north-east of Warrnambool.

Your issue seems to be about land and housing and I agree with that.

It’s an update year to date, progressing on target to this number full year.

The Greens and LNP will both use increased immigration and shortage of rental /housing supply at the next election to attack Labor……cue the scarey TV commercials saying where will they live? There won’t be enough hospital beds, the roads will be gridlocked ……your children won’t be able to get a place at University ……mark it down now - the higher level of immigration Vs pressure on rental availability and public services/infrastructure will be a very big issue in 2025

Let’s have a bet - the Greens win at least 3 seats from Labor in 2025. It’ll be Labor’s own ‘Teal moment’. If they manage to topple say Tanya (which they could based on the numbers) it’ll set the precedent…future elections will become bigger inner city battles between Labor and Greens ……the Greens aren’t as scary as they once were and they are going to position themselves as the party for the renters. A bit of crystal balling I know ….but I have a feeling about this

I’m sure my views on the Greens currently aren’t representative of their potential base, but for mine they have absolutely lost the plot and my vote.

I will take that bet Bill and give 5 to 1.

You are starting to act like a Troll.

Well that’s a compliment coming from you @Bacchusfox

They will if they’re forced into a minority government with the Greens

how many times do people need to tell you, labor dont pander to left voters.

They don’t have to.

We have nobody else feasible to vote for.

Meanwhile the LNP chases PHON voters with glee

The voice isnt that though.

Its not a group of city elites.

The model put forward by Langton and Co is one consisting of 32 direct representatives of indigenous communities all over the country. Voted in by those communities.

Its exactly not what you say it is, its trying something different

In the past its been “city elites”. Either conservative or left of centre folks put forward by the LNP or Labor depending whose in Power.

Price is representing exactly that. The “elites”. (Well one group of them anyway).

The whole concept mind you of “elites” is classist bullshit. The voice is actually a step towards democratic self determination by indigenous peoples.

Its absolutely mind boggling that there is such a viralent debate on it.

Giving a representative body of indigenous people a say on indigenous matters shouldn’t be so controversial. Especially just affording the absolute respect of acknowledging it in the constitution.

Indigenous people are and should be celebrated as special in this country. Its legitimately unique culture to our country, it should be nurtured so it flourishes. Not shat on and destroyed like it has for the past 235 years. Both unintentionally and intentionally.

The voice like consulting any industry group , community group etc impacted by a government policy. It makes good pragmatic sense.
