Australian Politics, Mark II

Anyone with even an ounce of decency, and even a pooftenth of common sense would realise that taking a measly (in Budget terms) 400K per year , and more than halving funding to a Charity that delivers staple foods and a few extras to families that are struggling, so they can you know, … EAT, … and moreover, … right on the cusp of Xmas, would not even have considered doing this, and would have sacked anyone that even suggested it.

Especially if that Rich Grinch purported to practice the Christian faith.

This guy has no political nous, and no fkn clue at all.

The Libs have been pilloried for years for being “Out Of Touch”, … well, IMO, nothing they’ve done prior, (and there’s been a shitload of stuff) is more out of touch than this act of bastardry.

GoneMo.

the money was the same, just spread to other charities doing the same work though, right? i agree it shouldn’t have been cut, but the “net” effect of the money was technically the same.

Greens MP Jeremy Buckingham faces calls to resign over sexual harassment allegations

New South Wales Greens MP Jenny Leong has used parliamentary privilege to deliver an explosive speech calling on her colleague Jeremy Buckingham to resign over sexual harassment allegations.

Key points:

  • Jeremy Buckingham has rejected the call to resign
  • Earlier this year a former Greens staffer also made allegations of sexual harassment against the MP
  • Jenny Leong said she could no longer stand by while “badly behaved men” were protected

Ms Leong said she had been elected to “speak up and speak out” and she “cannot stay silent anymore” about Mr Buckingham’s behaviour.

She also accused him of behaving in an “intimidating manner” towards her.

She said she believed former Greens staffer Ella Buckland, who came forward to the ABC’s 7.30 program earlier this year alleging Mr Buckingham touched her inappropriately in 2011.

“To Ella Buckland, who has shown strength by speaking out publicly about Jeremy’s act of sexual violence towards her and the subsequent disgusting behaviour she has endured, let me say on the record that I believe you,” she said.

Ms Leong also indicated there were other party members who had concerns about what she described as Mr Buckingham’s “unacceptable behaviour”.

“Jeremy’s actions and behaviour, some widely reported and documented and some still held in confidence which must be respected, have had a real and lasting consequence on individual women, members and former members of our party,” she said.

“Beyond what has been articulated by Ella Buckland about how Jeremy behaved towards her I know there have been active volunteers who have stepped aside or resigned as members as a result of Jeremy’s behaviour.”

Ms Leong said she used to consider Mr Buckingham a friend, but she wanted to share some information about him that she thought “goes to character”.

"On two occasions earlier this year Jeremy behaved in an aggressive and intimidating manner towards me, once in a public place and once in the corridors of this place.

“For a male Greens MP to behave in an aggressive manner, an intimidating manner towards a female Greens MP in the heart of her own electorate while people are passing by is clearly a sign of someone not being able to control their behaviour.”

‘It is a societal problem’

Ms Leong said the party had failed to deal with the issues properly and she and Greens senator Mehreen Faruqi were both joining forces to call for Mr Buckingham to go, or be expelled by the party.

"Jeremy, you have had countless opportunities to take responsibility for this, to apologise to those impacted and to seek to address them, instead you have followed with further aggressive tactics.

“I know you feel like you are the victim of internal party attacks but you must acknowledge your role in this and stand aside before more damage can be done.”

Ms Leong went on to say the problem was not specific to any party, nor limited to parliament.

“It is a societal problem,” Ms Leong said.

“I am no longer going to be a part of a system that runs a protection racket for badly behaved men in this place or in society — it has to stop.”

Mr Buckingham issued a short statement after Ms Leong’s speech indicating he would not be resigning.

“I reject Jenny Leong’s characterisation of a couple of conversations we’ve had,” he said.

He said the allegations relating to Ms Buckland had been investigated by an independent workplace investigation specialist and there had been no findings of wrongdoing.

Earlier this year Mr Buckingham was ousted from what is widely considered the last winnable spot on the Greens ticket by factional enemy David Shoebridge, so is unlikely to be re-elected in March.

He was down in Melbourne consoling people at Pellegrini’s pretty fast. Had his mate Guy there too. All of a sudden it’s safe for them to be in the same room.

I reckon a photo opportunity at Pelligrinis is very shabby.

I hope Dan and Bill have more sense.

Extremely cheap cashing in on people’s grief.

Political profiteering from Grief and Fear is the one thing they actually do well.

It’s their trademark.

The three charities all do good work, but source food differently and in some cases provide services to different regions. Instead of bringing in Oz foods to share the pie, the sensible option was to increase the size of the pie.

I’ve seen plenty of Labor pollies at Pellegrinis…never a single Lib pollie…so Bill and Dan at least wouldn’t be being hypocrites. They’ve made their pronouncements on the issue about their acquaintance and friendship with Sisto. Although pretty well anyone who’d met him was friendly with him.

Foley is a Deadset grub. But just like the kavanagh story in the US, I absolutely loathe the timing of these things*.

Complain/criminally charge etc when the harassment happens.

*Foley they need to cut to give a fresh face a run at the state election I think next march.

Close their trademark is actually Greed and Fear.

They hit the greed factor by offering prospects of tax cuts - many of which vanish like a non-core promise after the election. And Fear - well, there is just so much to fear isn’t there: what those nasty Commos in the ALP will do to you and the economy; the unions; refugees; black gangs; there is just SO much to fear!

She didn’t pursue it.

A lib MP did on her behalf.

Don’t put this on her

He didn’t actually ‘put it’ on anyone.

Elliot, the LNP guy, did not do it on behalf of the journalist. He has since aplogised for the harm it caused her, stating that it was unintentional . He did it for political gain alone and was not bothered about her, or sexual harassment for that matter.
Karen Middleton has let fly about the harassment she got from pollies ( among others) when working as a female journalist.

He said she should have complained or charged, not waited.

That seems to be pointed at her, no?

That’s what I was implying, albeit in a three sentence post

I can’t see where he said that, so no. He never mentioned anyone. He could have been talking about her, he could have been talking of the timing of the Liberal dude bringing it up now. I think you made the jump to her, not him.

Maybe I did. Do you read that as the Lib MP should charge or complain? That’d be strange as they don’t have the power to do either.

But, it alternatively it reads like it was a political ploy (by labor) to clean decks for a run at the election which makes less sense.

I read it the same as Beastie.

Vanders didn’t like the timing - the woman didn’t want this information released.

Vanders said to make the complaint at the time of the harassment. She didn’t make a complaint, the Lib leader dumped her in it.

Any wonder she didn’t want to make a complaint, in general women fair pretty poorly when these things happen, and when the story breaks.

She just left it to fade away. Never complained, never took action. Never said anything. It was a grubby liberal that brought it light hoping to score a political advantage over Foley for his party.
