Ben Rutten - Back to the grindstone (Part 2)

I get that.

I just think the issue you were trying to raise is that the repeat i50 may not have been such a damning stat if they had kicked straight.

My point, is that a kick out doesn’t necessarily mean a repeat i50, you need to turn it over.

In theory every missed shot could possibly lead to a string of coast to coast points scored if both teams shoot inaccurately, therefore no repeat i50 and no goals.

But that is another “what if” scenario.

The fact is they didn’t kick straight and we at times couldn’t clear the d50 due to decision or skill errors.

Yeah, you are right… I probably don’t understand a high zone defence. Good call.

Seems like there are 22 players every week wearing a big red sash that also don’t understand a high zone defence. So there is that.

I am glad that you understand how a high zone defence works though… makes us little people that much better informed.

I mean with your level of understanding you would clearly then know that a high zone defence requires exceptional athletic ability to be able to cover ground quickly, it also relies on precise skills particularly when moving forward as a quick turnover will leave you exposed… and you would also know that a high zone defence also requires a defensive unit that is hard working, highly switched on and who have incredible understanding with each other… and the key principle of the high zone defence is to close down space quickly making it difficult for the opposition to move forward once it is ‘set’. This then creates a feeling they must ‘go fast’ at all costs and then when the try to bomb it long, you rely on a trio of highly skilled tall defenders to mark and/or spoil the ball. Thus meaning that you would be best to have at least two key defenders that are big and bulky.

I’m so glad then… that our list matches this style so well. I’m so glad we don’t play under sized and skinny back men that were recruited to create an overlap slingshot style of rebound. I’m also very relieved that we recruited athletic midfielders that ticked ‘elite endurance’… and phew how relieved am I that we have wingers galore that can just run and run and run all day… could you IMAGINE how ugly it would be if we were playing an old, slow veteran in the literal key position for a high defensive zone… eeek! Again… imagine if we had recruited wingers that were more suited to be ‘defensive midfielders’ who were meant to drop back to HB to cover the slingshot attack through the corridor or otherwise be able to defend due to manic pressure on the ball carrier (aka ‘the Richmond style’).

So it is lucky that I just don’t understand the high zone defence… otherwise I’d think it was ■■■■ and not suited to our playing list… and we’d be absolute poo and down the bottom of the ladder with no hope of any success in the near future!

Yea very true.
They set up well. We executed very poorly.

Is getting Noble from north an idea to help Rutten cant remember what he did at Brisbane but was highly regarded by Hodge i think maybe an old head to support Rutten and would work well with Tapping one would hope.

I don’t think Reid should be playing AFL. BZT has far more runs on the board at VFL level and deserves his opportunity. I don’t like the mantra of play the kid because he was a high draft pick, it creates a poor culture, same as playing senior players every week despite them playing terrible for weeks on end.

Using Langford as ruck at stoppages on the wings was very Richmond 2017/18. They used McIntosh and Grigg? in the same role.

Richmond 17/18 is pretty much Ruttens entire coaching philosophy

Spot on. Interesting that this post has so few likes. Can’t get much support when commenting on the expertise of our alpha males. Armchair experts all.

I’m very simple and will happily defer to the folks on here, so the observations I will make can be taken with a grain of salt but here goes:

St Kilda and Swans games, we seem to manage to keep players back so that at least the opposition forwards had an opponent (or at least we were better at it) as against the Eagles where we let too many players get behind the defence unopposed.

I feel there is not enough chasing by our half forwards or mids when there is a kick out from our 50. It’s all well and good to be in position up the ground, but when the play is in action opposition mids and half back always seem available for the next handball or kicking option. This has left our defenders looking like headless chooks. Of course they have had crap seasons. Nobody could have stopped what was the result of that.

Having said that, it’s the return to attacking footy that has seen a turn around in recent weeks. Possible also a lift in performance from Hind and Redman along with Massimo’s introduction with his impeccable kicking.

I will say this over an over again. Truck has shown a propensity over the last two years of being slow or unwilling to change something once it is in place. Whether its game plans or match day tactics. The club should have been much quicker to realise that whatever plan had been put in place was not working. It was obvious after 6 rounds and it seemed to take a good half year to see any indication of change.

The base statics such as tackle count and contested footy stats were putrid. That’s on the coaching panel. Took far too long to address and shouldn’t have taken the embarrassment of the first Swans match to (seem) to make that realisation.

Lastly, I cant believe you wouldn’t tailor and game plan that didn’t take into account the cattle you were putting on the park. I just cant fathom the stupidity of putting in place something your playing group is incapable of executing. You weigh up your players strength and weaknesses and plan accordingly.

Clarkson has met with GWS already.

That doesn’t surprise me and they were my pick for him when Cameron stood down. Perfect fit, good list, lots of AFL support and a chance to get them to a GF quickly. He will also be very well paid, outside of the cap for a team the AFL still promotes.

The win against Sydney will relegate this news to obscurity for many in red & black this week.

But if we pull out the usual pathetic letdown performance against the Lions, this news will again feature prominently.

Interesting timing.

Reckon Ruttens need to show the replay of when Brisbane flogged us as motivation worked against Sydney

Lightning very rarely strikes twice.

Fck i would love to beat them on their own dung heap and seeing the eat ■■■■■■■■ grin wiped off Danihers face

Pidge back this week to shut down Cameron

Problem isn’t that there a couple, the problem is that the game plan has most of them doing it all at once

We’re not turfing him, best we can hope for is more development staff and maybe a genuine senior assistant to act as a drill sergeant

Choco or Ross would be my picks

Also i would offer Buckley a midfield coaching role if hes intrested

What do we make of our last 3 wins being so up and down throughout different periods of each of the games? Hawks, saints, swans.

Coz we are a young side?

My question to the club is, if you think he’s such a good coach, then have the balls to say “he’s our man” and extend his contract now. Otherwise if you keep him, have him go into next season without a contract past 2023, he will be the most under pressure coach in the AFL. If you’re not prepared to do that now, then you’re not 100% convinced in him as coach, and given who is available then you have to make a move otherwise if you sack him next year you’ve missed the boat on one of the best coaches in the past 30 years…
