Ben Rutten - Back to the grindstone (Part 2)

I hope we dont i think rutten will need to have us in front of the win/loss record before the bye for a contract extenstion also our defence will need to show massive improvement

Choco would be perfect imo, he (and Yze) were responsible for the lifting of skill standards at Melbourne.

I’d also love to get Buckley in as an assistant, I think he would connect well with our good citizen types.

Hird as the VFL coach/development coach would be my other pipedream. The thought of him mentoring Martin and Perkins is mouth watering

We almost had Yze too. Dees came in last minute and grabbed him.

ESSENDON

  • Lost their 2021 brand; ball movement and scoring dried up; defence has gone backwards which was a concern at stages in 2021; second-youngest team and second-least experienced team on average

LITTLE WINS (Rds 10-14)

  • Ladder percentage of 86.9

  • 6th points against

  • 2nd points against from stoppages

BALL MOVEMENT

– 14th points from back half (down from 2nd in 2021)

– 11th for moving ball inside 50 from halfback (1st in 2021)

STOPPAGES

– 14th clearance differential (9th in 2021)

– 15th points from stoppage differential (2nd in 2021)

– 9th generating scores from clearance (1st in 2021)

PRESSURE

– 18th pressure applied

SANGUINE Bomber fans look away now, because the 2022 analysis gets ugly. “The main point for Essendon continues to be their inability to defend full-ground ball movement,” Harding said. “Since 2019 they’ve ranked in the bottom four for forward-half intercepts and for allowing the ball to move the length of the field in every single year. This has been a consistent system issue they haven’t been able to rectify.” Harding sat in the MCG stands for the match against Carlton and thought defenders looked lost. “Some guys press up and some guys fold back, so there are inconsistencies in their system which make it really tough on their backs. Their defenders have to defend fast attack, which is really challenging to do, and then they also have to try and launch the counter-attack to get them to score. A lot is being asked of them at the moment.” The Bombers have been smashed by injury. But then again, so have the Blues. “Carlton have had to field a young back six and inexperienced key defender group, and yet their system is still clear. Essendon’s defence is the major issue and until that’s rectified they won’t be competitive,” Harding said. Why are they also last for pressure? “They don’t have the high premium on contest work that Melbourne, Brisbane and the top teams have, and their inability to shutdown teams around the contest also feeds quick ball movement against them that can be hard to defend,” Harding said. The hope hinges on generation next. “I’ve loved Mason Redman’s development as a really good attacking defender, Nic Martin has shown plenty as a wingman and we’re seeing more from Jye Caldwell, Nick Hind, Sam Durham, Archie Perkins and Ben Hobbs” Harding said. “That’s the genesis of the next great Essendon side.”

GOLD NUGGET: PETER WRIGHT has been targeted 121 times inside 50, ranked No. 1 in the AFL. JAYDEN LAVERDE has conceded 35 goals, the most in the AFL.

After that review, Rutten is likely to get a 2 year extension knowing this club.

i reckon even brand has more runs on the board than reid, and don’t understand as to why one is given games here and there, and one doesn’t look like they’ll be used at afl, even if they knee cap 40 players on the list.

Is it just me or has the wins and some of the losses this year hit that much harder than usual?

The wins v Hawthorn and v Sydney in particular have honestly been the most ive enjoyed live since 2017 while the losses like v Geel, v Coll, v Syd etc have sapped me big time.

You forgot ■■■■ Carlton

Hopefully they remember a brand of footy this weekend.

I don’t want a norf style drubbing.

Have some pride ffs and who knows maybe pull off a massive upset.

It’s worth watching that clip. One thing is clear - whether or not you think Rutten’s pre & post game addresses are any good - he speaks very differently to the players compared to how he presents in pressers.

It’s surprising he hasn’t improved in pressers - but it’s an insignificant part of his job description - as it doesn’t effect how we play each week. But his presentation (to outsiders) in pressers together with playing poorly very much feeds the hate and spitefulness shown by many in here towards Rutten.

His poor presser skills are irrelevant (to our weekly performance), and our poor form is the result of so many many factors most of which are invisible to us as they take place during the week as part of the process of training and preparing elite sporting teams.
If we continue to play some better footy Rutten will probably survive until 2023 and I know there are many who want us to lose badly so he gets replaced before then.

Haha, we’ve had such few wins this season that they make a documentary when we get one. Nice.

Good insight though.

A contrarian view here, but being a teacher myself I think Rutten’s style of communicating to the players is brilliant. It’s simple, concise and really is about addressing 2-3 things. If we break it down, Rutten is a Bloke in his 40s talking to players 20 years younger than him. Along with S.Mitchell, McRae and Nicks is the “new school” approach to coaching. Older methods of communication (Barrassi, Kennedy, Jeans) just don’t work with the current generation. I feel that it’s just going to take time for the players to understand the game plan and for us to rebuild to that game plan. My 2c

That’s one of our problems, we pour the mayo on and make a doco about a home and away win, the better clubs do things like that when they win a final.
