I’d disagree. We have had a ‘great’ month because we have, once again, abandoned Trucks plan and we are just playing natural football.
Same pattern every year… just this year we left it too late to ‘turn off’ the BS game plan and go back to our style.
I think Rutten has saved his job which just means more pain for us next season. Diabolically bad system that he continues to try and implement… four years in a row it has failed.
Gee, another Truck Bad post from you.
Enjoy the farking win.
Or at least wait 24 hours.
Using Caldwell head to head with Neale was a ripper move. And showed up Neale’s lack of defensive efforts.
Heppell on the wing using his positioning is also a win win - really shown when Ham came on and we had someone who tried to play “natural” football, instead of using the system.
The two rucks was also good. If only to leave 2LP forward all game.
Edit; four years in a row it has failed.
Waiting for you to claim all our failures since 2010 are Trucks fault next.
Your post reminded me of coming across some comments by Dees supporters before the 2021 season started, so I went back and found some of them. I’m not suggesting that it’s a sign that Rutten’s gonna lead us to a flag next season, nor that you wouldn’t find similar comments about coaches who end up sacked before the bye. In fact, I don’t really know what I’m trying to suggest. Perhaps just that being certain doesn’t make you right.
Sorry, but Rutten has completely changed the game plan over the past month in the following ways that include, but not necessarily limited to:
Ending the horrific “high defensive press” where our HB backline pressed as high as our F50 regardless of where there HF opponents were at. We saw it in the Carlton game and it raised its ugly head in the Eagles game. We beat the Saints, Swans & Lions by specifically not doing this.
Team structure: Rutten has realised you can’t play both Kelly and Heppell in the back 6. Too slow. D’Ambrosio came at the right time and has seen Heppell move to the wing. Also, Rutten realises McGrath is a naturally good small defender. Also, that Hinds plays his best football by running past for the handball. We have gone to never wanting to handball in defence after a mark to always looking for a handball for run and carry. Moving the ball quickly by handball and run has seen us average almost exactly 100 points a game for the past 4 weeks for a 3-1 result versus averaging almost exactly 50 points a game, under the previous style, for a 0-4 result in that 4 week block.
Respecting the opposition’s best player - witness Caldwell on Neale from the start versus what happened in Round 2 when Neale single-handedly took the game away from us.
Picking a contested ball player in Hobbs on a HF flank over Ham. Ham and/or Cutler, the two worst contested ball players on our list, were regulars…not any more. You can see how poor Ham is in his Q4 against the Lions. Tom Hird or a Menzies would have given us more. The end result is we have won contested ball for 4 games straight - something I can’t ever recall us doing in a long time.
Perhaps Rutten got read the riot act. Perhaps he started accepting feedback. Perhaps he realised himself he had to change what was failing. Regardless, I am grateful that these changes have been made but I wouldn’t be extending him just yet.
I think there is a middle ground between the high press, and Worsfold’s defensive game plan of, conceding the length the ground and only defending from D50.
You need to create repeat entries to become a top 4 side. Under Worsfold we just retreated to defensive 50 and had no intent on stopping the opposition going coast to coast. In fact this was the only way we got the ball back.
Yesterday looked similar to Worsfold’s game plan. Where all the players just run back to defensive 50 to defend.
These types of wins are sugar hits, but that game style won’t win finals or premierships. It’s a very short sighted game plan.
