Iâm sure it has cause thereâs many a folk indicating they see it, people on here who are actually aware enough to narrow down exactly whatâs changed and provide examples.
What I love (or donât) is when the kings and Montagnas of the world canât actually specify any amelioration thatâs taken place; itâs always"ah yeah kingy the game plans definitely changed/been stripped back/built on toâŚ" and then pull out some random stat relating to contested, uncontested or demonic possession.
And then quickly add something about Drapers goal so they canât be held accountable for their drivel and guesswork.
And they make a living.

I know people love to bag King. But this is absolutely correct. Iâve been banging on about it all year.
Free flowing & exciting football hasnât served us for 20 years. We havenât moved on since Knights implemented the ârun & gunâ game plan.
Rutten gave the new game plan 10 weeks, and then caved to the pressure. It takes longer than 10 weeks to change 20 years of bad culture.

Itâs pretty exciting to watch my team completely nullify a talented opposition and hold them to 8 goals for the whole match. But yeah, ârun and gunâ is a sophisticated analysis.

Iâm actually still waiting for that.
Apart from changing personnel. Which has been at least half availability based.
Having stuck my neck out to post in detail about what I saw as our game plan, offensively & defensively, and copped plenty of flak from the usual suspects (though a pleasing number of likes, at least for the effort) all bar one poster, and kudos to them has just gone âman on manâ.

Ruttenâs game plan sucks. It should have gone after 2 weeks.
You can run and gun, as long as you run back the other way just as hard. We have been far better defensively since he simplified his gameplan.

Thereâs no ONE game plan. There are many possible game plans thatâll win you a flag. No reason you can be a high scoring top team or a lower scoring top team.
It just comes down to the one that allows you to outscore the opposition. And to do it consistently.
And isnât absolutely dependent on one player, because if they go down then so does your game.

No top team plays 1:1?
Did you watch the Geelong Carlton game on Saturday night?
Geelong deployed two players in 1:1 roles in the midfield:
- Atkins to Walsh all game which muted Walshâs effectiveness significantly (note Walsh did get 3 coaches votes but his disposal was always seemingly under pressure and lower quality than normal).
- Blicavs on Cripps was the master stroke, Completely shut Cripps out of the game (except when Blicavs relieved Stanley in the ruck). Blicavs got 9 coaches votes and was clear BoG.
This is why Carlton struggled all night (except for a brief period towards the end of Q1 when their midfield did get on top for about 10 minutes). Carlton cannot win with both Cripps and Walsh muted/shut down and Chris Scott had no hesitation doing this. He knows the Cats midfield cannot match the Blues midfield man for man with Cripps and Walsh being the keys.
Sheedy started this with the use of Shane Heard in the early-mid 80s.
Every good side will look to neutralise the oppositionâs biggest strength(s). Finally, Rutten has woken up to it and not before time.

yep - I donât get why that canât work. Seems everything becomes a thing because a team does it and thatâs the only thing to do, until of course another team does something different and that become the only thing to do.
It does not matter how you outscore your opponents, 1:1, 2:1, zone, 22 ruckmen, 22 midgets, all forwards stay in the forward 50, etc etc.
Whatever works for your side.
If it means itâll get you a higher score than the opposition and you can execute well and consistently then itâs fine.
Too much dogma gets thrown around.

Iâd much rather a headline reading, â Top 4 or top 8 contenderâ. The last three weeks, while being exciting and refreshing, only compound the feeling of disappointment and raise questions of why this club canât become a consistently high performing team???

Understanding when to refine or compliment a core strategy.
Which goes out the window the minute a new coach comes in.
Yeah, that seems to be what usually happens over time and with repetition and adjustment in any field.
Referencing Shane Heard makes no sense. He was (later) in his career an out and out hard tag stopper that sacrificed his own game. No coach deploys that now.
Surely youâre not referencing what Heard did to Atkins? And in what measure did Atkins âmute Walshâs effectiveness significantlyâ?
Walsh had a game high 33 at 87%, game high clearances and votes from either one or both of the coaches.
The 18 players on the ground need to work effectively in unison. Following an opponent around means he is determining where I go, rather than me working in unison with my 17 team mates. Hence the better team defensive units will exploit and beat the 1-on-1 focused defensive units.
The top teams ALL implement a zone/team defensive structure as one albeit important component of their game plans.
