Best 22 2019 - Round 1

Oh I am worried about him too.

Brown and Stewart are both contracted for a reason.

The Best 22 of Essendon 2019 *assuming we get Shiel for picks

B: Francis Hooker Saad
HB: McKenna Hurley Gleeson

MID: Zaharakis Heppell McGrath
RCK: Bellchambers Shiel Merrett

HF: Smith Daniher Fantasia
Fwd: Stringer McKernan Tippa

Int: Langford Parish Begley Redman

E: Myers Laverde Stewart Guelfi

  • Backline writes itself down nicely, Gleeson the obvious one with some risk coming off serious injury but super handy as a utility def. Redman as the 7th def on the int. Ridley also a chance.

  • Midfield starting to look deep here with Langford, Parish and Smith all heavily rotated through. Zerrett/Shiel combo will have significant benefit against the tag. Zaharakis to focus on making the wing spot his own next year.

  • Forward line is super strong. Begley coming off the bench in the fwd rotations. Merrett, Smith and Langers to be the primary mid-fwds. Expecting to see Stringer played as the ‘striker’ (DeGoey role at pies) throughout the year based on match-ups.

  • Myers edged out by Langers and arrival of Shiel. Lav to develop midfield craft in VFL, play Stringer role if he goes down. Stewart challenging with McKernan for best chemistry with Daniher. Guelfi is the genuine can play anywhere backup - should see fairly consistent game-time throughout 2019 covering injuries.

Of the remaining players on the list, depth looking okay:
Back: Ridley, Ambrose, BZT (Hartley, Dea, McNiece)
Mid: Mutch, Colyer, Clarke (Mynott)
Fwd: Brown, Houlahan (Baguley)
Rck: Draper (Luey)

  • Needs are around the fwds-mid from a draft perspective but that may be defined by our final delistings. Outside of that, Irishman Jordan Morrissey would be a good cat(b) rookie to add to the group.

Remember when Ambrose was a forward…1st year played 16 games kicked 13 goals 3.
Will he win the 2km run this time?

Looks really good WOB. Especially the use of first names.

Anyone else thought of Shiel walking to the centre bounce with Heppell and Zerrett by his side?

GOOD GRIEF.

Watch for Ridley in 2019. I think he will come in and stay in. #2019Bolter

I’d really like to see him on a wing, but I think they are probably earmarked for Zaka and McGrath.

I rate Ridley but it’s hard to see him getting a look in next season other than injury

I think he’ll be a lock by half way through the season.

I’m doubtful that Gleeson is a walk up best 22 starter.

Hf: stringer McKernan Fantasia
FF: tippa Daniher McGrath

Brown unlucky, parish if Scully doesn’t eventuate

Redman Hurley Francis
Saad Hooker McKenna
Smith Heppell Zaka
Begley JD Raz
Stringer McKernan/Brown Walla
TBell Shiel Zerrett
Langford McGrath Parish Myers

Redman and Begley named over Guelfi Ridley Lav based on a hunch.

Redman getting injured in the last 2 minutes of that glorious win against the Eagles in Perth was the only negative from that game. He was looking really impressive in the couple of games he played and looked to have the balance between lock down and rebound that we needed down there as a medium sized defender. Fingers crossed he recovers well and picks up where he left off.

Agree. Redman will be the one to have a breakout year like Langford last season imo

I thought Francis could push him out but think we look pretty balanced with both him and Gleeson. Just got to stay out of each other’s way a bit

Fremantle have requested to play us at optus round 1

Bit silly.

Wouldn’t think you’d actually apply to ensure a Loss to kick off your campaign??

Very odd club Freo.

Smart by Freo. They know it takes 8 rounds for our new players to gel.
