Those were the days!
Unless you want to read the number from the top deck…
Appointment of Darren is a very smart move. So smart I’m shocked we did it. He would have spent the last few years watching Koby play, so would have a very good knowledge of the entire age group, team mates and opposition, and the year above and below Koby.
Compared to you know who, who would occasionally turn up to half a game here or there and strut around sipping coffee whilst on the phone. When high in the grandstand were other club recruiters, glued to the game with binoculars and spreadsheeting on their laptops.
Imagine the AFL scrap FS for 2027, Pies have a bad year finish low enough to grab him, then sail past us with the Daicos/Bewick show! Oh baby!
no, as far as i can tell must be two picks in the same round to match a bid and if we some how manage to finish above 9th next year and he is bid on in the first ten picks and then bad luck we dont get him
that would be nightmare fuel, what would be worse is if we finish say tenth make the wildcard and then win a wildcard spot that could be enough to see us miss out
Live trading exists, so it could still happen.
I mean yes technically we could trade up and take him as an ordinary pick, but otherwise if you’re out of the bottom ten you wouldn’t have access if a bid come
I can see Essendon trading out their first round pick this season, which would secure Bewick Jr. It likely we will look at cheaper trade options in fringe players. I have an eye on Jake Rogers at Gold Coast Suns for one in addressing our small forward depth, but can see us going for Max Gruzewski from Giants and there is a but of talk already about us going for Zane Duursma at North Melbourne. Trade out this year, draft picks secured for next year. Potentially Blake Justice is secured with an end of first round draft pick or early second round. But very early to say on all this.
If the rule becomes that you need picks (max 2) in the same round to match, then they haven’t thought it through. But, hey, it’s the AFL - they aren’t real good at making rule changes that work.
But, if that’s how it’s proposed to be -
Let’s say Bewick is bid on at pick 17 and round 1 ends at pick 18 (for this illustration, assume no insertions for FS/Academy matches). We would have to trade in pick 18 to match. No other options. And if the bid comes at pick 18, no options.
It’s rubbish.
I seem to remember that when Darren was starting to play with us his dad was a scout for us with Western Australian kids.
I don’t know if Bewick is any good at spotting talent or not. I mean that sincerely. If his name wasn’t Bewick, the obvious positive is an incremental (assuming it’s not one in, one out) talent spotter to assist finding quality kids. Another good example of additional, much needed resourcing if the recruiting area which wasn’t adequately funded in previous years.
Bewick focusses on Victorian kids, given Tassie coming it makes sense we might be focussing on locals regarding retention.
I think that makes two new part timers added recently which is a great thing.
we say it wasnt funded but how much of it was also ego and outdated ideas
Its also weird with that situation because pick 18 wouldnt be able to just match pick 17 with them removing the discount
Pretty sure he got Winderlich to the club.
Then he is good by me, I bloody loved Licha had to be one the best kicks going around
I don’t think they’d do maximum two picks plus a top 10 lockout plus picks have to be in the same round. Latest I’ve seen is maximum two picks, possibly no free agent compensation in the top 10, and loading the cost to match for top four clubs. With a fast enough fall off on the points values, maximum two picks to match basically sorts out their problems. It’s not necessarily good or fair, but it sorts it out.
Happy to go into a points deflect if we can’t get enough picks to match there is no way we are missing out on Koby
Winder was a gippy boy, doubt bewick had anything to do with him.
