Billy Hartung

It’s interesting that the general perception on the board here is that Colyer had a terrible 2017 season. But reading the SEN player rating you get the impression that he had an alright year.

I don’t think he had the same impact he was having in 2014 and 2015 but some of the calls to get rid of him for trades were overstated (Imagine that! On this board of all places!).

This is why the Hawks have been a successful club so far as their list management. They make decisions on guys promptly.

They decided Hartung wasn’t going to make it, and bang - delisted. If he was drafted by Essendon he’d be that guy who would still be clogging our list at 28, having played 80 odd games in ten seasons.

Hartung should definitely get another crack at it, but do we need another sub-180cm/80kg midfielder? We just have to find some inside mids via DFA or some mature aged blokes who’ve been doing the business at VFL/WAFL/SANFL level who can come in and do a job.

Not even talking about Colyer this year.
Stats are stats and watching is watching.
I think Colyer had an extremely poor 2017.
Should have been dropped early on. Wasn’t. And as the season progressed there wasn’t really time to do it.

But stats count for something.
And you can choose any year you like for Colyer and compare them to the year Hartung got delisted.
Fact is, they just don’t stack up.

hartung and colyer are different players though.

think colyer plays around the packs a lot more than hartung does. the way ive seen us use colyer is that becuase we have been bereft of explosive inside midfielders since forever, colyer has played around the packs to try and alleviate that. So say watson/ hepp/ zach even may get the clearance but then instantly look for colyer to hand the ball off to and quickly break away, typically as the 2nd midfielder to touch the ball from a stoppage. dont get me wrong he does often get the ball in space and the like, but that is not specifically his role within the team.

hartung on the other hand, always seen him as a stanton type. will just keep on keeping on with his fitness and use his pace to burn players off when he has space to do so, but his role doesnt confine him to being around stoppages and providing a break away from a pack, rather he is the 3rd/ 4th person to get a ball from a stoppage and uses his pace to break away on a wing.

dont think stats are really fair to use as a comparison, becuase i reckon hartung has a lot more freedom in his game, whereas ive always seen colyer as having a very specific and confined role within our team, which is why i reckon his spot may be on very shaky ground with mcgrath moving into the midfield and smiths addition to the club.

That’s fair enough.
It explains the more metres that Hartung gets (crap stat, I know, but it’s something that Colyer is kind of renowned for).
Hartung gets far more of the ball, and turns it over less, and that’s not last year for Colyer, it’s any year. Which is…pretty conclusive I’d have thought.

Colyer’s heat map (for this year) is pretty purely wing.

RIP me.

Look, clearly I’m frustrated by all of this.
So I’m gonna try to make this my last post on the matter.
It’s not like we’re getting him, anyway.

But the idea that we don’t want a player of the same type as Colyer, who’s younger, gets more of the pill, carries it further, turns it over less, but are happy to wait for Jerrett or Long to maybe get as good…
It, like I said, it frustrates me.
He’s right there!
He costs nothing!
Just get him!

Okay, wim shut up now.

Hartung is fast but makes poor decisions, and is soft IMO
Colyer is fast but has poor disposal
Jerrett is a bit soft, but generally makes good decisions, doesnt get enuf of the pill
Long - we havent seen enough exposed form at AFL level. Yes i loved that pass to Joe, he has pace too
Morgan - I dont think i’ve even seen play so cant comment.

I wouldnt be chasing Hartung though.

Hartung is a massive spud.

I’m not sure this is entirely correct.

A quick look at the Hawks current list show it includes some list cloggers that have been around for a while: Whitecross, O’Rourke, Ceglar, O’Brien and Schoenmakers.

Also I think that when you have been at the top of the ladder for the past 10 years with a solid group of stars its makes it pretty easy to keep that core group and turn over the the ‘also rans’, fringe players and high risk speculative picks more quickly.

Then compare that to where we have been with the Saga. We needed to keep some players on the list who probably would have (should have) been cut, simply because we didn’t have the draft picks to replace them.

I agree that we probably did keep some players to long. Steinberg comes to mind. But I also don’t think its correct to say that other teams don’t as well. For every high profile name like Hartung there are Hawks no names sitting in list spots 40-44 and on their rookie list.

His skills and decision making are terrible.

This delisting does not surprise me, I’m sure another club will take him and I really hope it’s not us.

He’s below average.

We do need a specialist grand final sprinter…

Hartung has scope for a lot more improvement. He’s good enough imo, I won’t complain if we didn’t pick him up but if we do, it wouldn’t bother me either. He’ll definitely get another shot somewhere

When do the vultures come on to pick over the carcasses?

Ie when do Port, North and Hawthorn start topping up their lists?

My Hawks mate said that hawks offered him a 1 year deal @ $250k, his dad (his manager) rejected the offer as they had a 2 year offer elsewhere @300k per year,
Now as he was offered a deal but rejected it, not sure if he can be picked up as a delisted free agent, so may need to be picked up via the pre season draft.
Brisbane perhaps?

Hope its not us!!

Green was the same last year, so I suspect he can be a DFA.
