These Very Public Urinals Are Pi$$ing Off Parisians

3 minutes

The “urinoir” is essentially a box with an opening in the front.

**

PARIS (Reuters) - A new set of eco-friendly but completely exposed urinals deployed on the streets of Paris are provoking uproar from locals.

One of the bright red “urinoirs” installed on the Ile Saint-Louis, not far from Notre Dame cathedral and overlooking tourist boats passing on the Seine, has caused particular indignation.

Locals have written to the town hall to demand its removal and are planning a petition.

“There’s no need to put something so immodest and ugly in such an historic spot,” said Paola Pellizzari, 68, owner of a Venetian art store.

“It’s beside the most beautiful townhouse on the island, the Hotel de Lauzun, where Baudelaire lived,” she said, referring to the 19th-century French poet.

She feared the urinal, installed around 20 meters (22 yards) from a primary school, “incites exhibitionism”.

The designer of the “Uritrottoir” - a combination of the French words for urinal and pavement - said it offered an “eco solution to public peeing”. The device is essentially a box with an opening in the front and a floral display on top, containing straw which transforms into compost for use in parks and gardens.

But Ile Saint-Louis locals said the receptacle, with no stall around it of any kind, could blight their ultra-chic neighborhood.

“It’s horrible,” said the 50-year-old owner of a nearby art gallery, who declined to give his name.

“We’re told we have to accept this but this is absolutely unacceptable. It’s destroying the legacy of the island. Can’t people behave?”

Local mayor Ariel Weil insisted the devices were necessary, however. Paris authorities have rolled out four of the stand-up loos in spots where public peeing has been a problem, and a fifth is planned.

“If we don’t do anything, then men are just going to pee in the streets,” he said. “If it is really bothering people, we will find another location.”

Some have even branded their installation discriminatory.

“They have been installed on a sexist proposition: men cannot control themselves (from the bladder point of view) and so all of society has to adapt,” said Gwendoline Coipeault of French feminist group Femmes Solidaires. “The public space must be transformed to cause them minimum discomfort.”

“It’s absurd, no one needs to urinate in the street.”

LOL

How do they wash their hands? Could be worse, could be a public place to take dumps…

The shooter carried out his attack at the popular waterfront dining and shopping precinct at around 1.34pm on Sunday (local time), police said.

Last February, David Katz won the Madden 2017 Championship. A tweet shared by the Buffalo Bills American football team shows him posing with a ‘Madden Champ’ shirt. Picture: Twitter

Jacksonville Sheriff Mike Williams confirmed that Katz is from Baltimore and had travelled to the city for the tournament.

Sheriff Willams said final confirmation of the suspect’s identity was pending as the FBI in Baltimore aided in the investigation.

Authorities did not give a motive for the shootings.

Madden 19 developer EA Sports lists a David Katz as a 2017 championship winner.

He has used the names Bread, mrslicedbread, ravenschamp and ravens2012champ in Madden competitions.

This year’s competition was held in a gaming bar that shares space with a pizzeria. Viewers could watch the games online and see the players.

The shooter carried out the attack using at least one handgun believed to be a semi-automatic rifle.

The suspect’s car was seized by police near the scene.

After the shooting, heavily armed FBI agents entered a Baltimore townhouse, said to be the home of the suspect’s father.

FBI spokesman Dave Fitz confirmed this.

Agents could be seen inside the home Sunday evening (local time) near Baltimore’s Inner Harbor. They wore bulletproof vests and carried long guns. Reporters who were gathered outside did not see any authorities carrying any bags of evidence.

Dozens of ambulances and police cars arrived at the scene of the shooting within two minutes.

The sheriff’s office said terrified gamers were found hiding in locked areas.

Six victims were taken to Jacksonville’s UF Health Hospital, five were said to be in stable condition and one in serious condition, hospital staff said.

A spokesman for Jacksonville’s Memorial Hospital said it was treating three other victims, all were in stable condition.

LOST TOURNAMENT

According to Steven “Steveyj” Javaruski, prior to the shooting a competitor “lost it” after losing in the tournament.

He “targeted a few people” and shot at least five victims before killing himself, Mr Javaruski told The Los Angeles Times in a direct message on Twitter.

Mr Javaruski said he was able to get out of the venue with a police escort.

Mr Javaruski later tweeted: “RIP to Trueboy and Spotme,” adding “This is the worst day of my life.”

Another witness, Javaris Long, told the Tampa Bay Times that the suspect was “nerdy” and allegedly got mad because he had lost the tournament, so he went to his car, got his gun, came back and “started blasting everybody.”

LIVE STREAM CAPTURED SHOOTING

The shooting took place during a regional qualifier for the Madden NFL 19 online game tournament at the GLHF Game Bar, according to the venue’s website.

The event, expected to culminate in a Las Vegas event with $US125,000, was being shown on Twitch, a live video streaming platform.

A red dot that appeared to be a laser pointer was visible on the chest of a player seconds before the first gunshot was heard.

After several more gunshots, people scream and one person cried out, “Oh f—, what’d he shoot me with?” The stream did not show the shooting but audio of the terrifying scene is quite clear.

The moment the shooting started during a video game tournament was live-streamed on Twitch.

Video game manufacturer Electronic Arts (EA) tweeted: “This is a horrible situation, and our deepest sympathies go out to all involved.”

SOUNDED LIKE BALLOON POPPING

Marquis Williams, 28, and Taylor Poindexter, 26, at first thought they heard a balloon popping. When the loud bangs kept coming, the Chicago couple and fellow video gamers attending a weekend tournament recognised them as gunfire and began scrambling for an exit.

As he fled, Williams, 28, said, he could see the back of the gunman’s head as the attacker appeared to be walking backward as he fired.

“We didn’t see like a face,” Ms Poindexter, 26, told reporters a few hours after the attack, standing on crutches after spraining her ankle trying to escape. “We did see him with two hands on a gun, walking back just popping rounds.” The couple said people trampled others in the panic to escape. They ran to a nearby restaurant, where workers were waving people inside, and hid in a bathroom until police arrived.

“Initially we thought it was a balloon popping, but there weren’t any balloons in the room. Then we heard repeat shots and we took off running,” Mr Williams said.

Competitor Derek Jones, 30, said: “No one deserves to die over playing a videogame, you know?”

Mr Jones said he was sitting in a back patio outside the tournament venue when he heard the gunshots.

“We’re just out here trying to win some money for our families and stuff.”

He said he jumped a fence and ran, leaving behind his backpack and cellphone.

“You know, I’m glad I lost today,” he said. “Because if I’d won, I would have been in that game bar right then playing a game and not paying attention. And he could have come and I’d probably be dead right now.”

Mr Jones said he knew the suspect by his online gamer tags - often “Bread” or “Sliced Bread” - and claimed he had played against him online but had never spoken to him personally.

SHOOTING REIGNITES GUN OUTRAGE

Survivors of February’s shooting at a high school in Parkland, Florida have called out the state’s politicians and the National Rifle Association for failing them and the latest shooting victims.

The Parkland massacre killed 17 people.

Two years ago another gunman killed 49 people in Orlando at the Pulse nightclub.

Since Parkland, many students of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School have become outspoke gun control activists.

David Hogg took to Twitter to call out Florida Republican Senator Marco Rubio to introduce gun control reforms.

“How many mass shootings in your state will it take for you to do something?” Mr Hogg asked.

Florida Governor Rick Scott said he had offered to provide authorities with any resources they might need.

On Tuesday voters will pick the Republican and Democratic nominees to replace outgoing Governor Scott.

Responding to the shooting, former Florida democrat Gwen Graham sent an email to supporters that said the only way to end mass shootings is to “vote out the politicians complicit in this cycle of death.”

Florida Senator Bill Nelson expressed “shock” and “outrage”.

Former Miami Beach Mayor Philip Levine also released a statement saying, “I am horrified and I am furious” and that it’s time for new leaders.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said US President Donald Trump has been briefed but the president is yet to comment about the shooting. The president has been criticised for ignoring the shooting, instead tweeting about approval ratings.

Mr Trump’s daughter Ivanka tweeted her condolences.

that’s kinda weird for a kindergarten event

A kindergarten principal in China has been fired after she organised a pole dancing performance for a ceremony welcoming children at the start of the school year.

Key points:

  • Footage of the pole dance was widely shared on social media
  • The local education authority dismissed the principal and is investigating further
  • The principal has since apologised for the performance

Parents attending the ceremony in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen were horrified when a scantily clad pole dancer took to the stage and proceeded with a routine in plain view of their children.

Journalist Michael Standaert, whose children attend Xinshahui Kindergarten, tweeted that when his wife called to complain, principal Lai Rong said it was “international and good exercise” before hanging up the phone.

He also posted a photo of one of a set of advertisements for a pole dancing school that he said had been placed around the school.

Video footage of the pole dance, as well as one other burlesque performance by a second dancer, was widely shared on Twitter and Chinese social media.

Some users said parents should not entrust their children to such a school, while others were more measured in their responses.

“Pole dancing is by nature sexy and flirtatious, and by that measure, it is for the eyes of adults, not young children,” said an anonymous user on Weibo, a popular social media site in China.

Another said: “Nursery children should learn knowledge, but not too much knowledge!”

The performance at the government-owned kindergarten, part of a ceremony observing the start of China’s school year, was quickly denounced by the local education bureau.

The authority has since called for the dismissal of the kindergarten director and is investigating further.

Ms Lai issued an apology, saying she thought “inviting professional dancers to the kindergarten to perform for the parents would liven up the mood”.

She told The Washington Post that she had sent the apology before the bureau became involved.

“I was thinking of asking the forgiveness from the parents and also promising them that we would not teach the kids this kind of dance,” she told the Post.

“I just want the kids to know the existence of this kind of dance. That’s all.”

In a social media post, the education bureau of Baoan district also warned other kindergartens against inappropriate behaviour.
