Every game needs a one on one umpire to player to adjudicate the game.
Four field umpires is ridiculous!! How can anyone expect a measly 4 umpires to see such micro transgressions???
The issue with that free kick was that the umpire out and out lied. He told Redman that he didn’t have eyes on the ball. From where he was standing ie. to Redman’s back, there is no way he could see where he was looking. It was an absolute gift to Geelong which was rightly called out by the commentators.

Remember the time, i think against freo where Redman had the ball coming back over his head in the defensive goal square and he took the mark and the umpire pinged him for a high fend on Walters who came back with the flight and hit Redman front on.

Would I be wrong in believing that no other player has been suspended yet for pushing players into a contest? Shiel will probably be the 1st & only player to face suspension. A bit like how Fletcher is the only player suspended for attempted striking, Johnson the only player to give away a 50 for saying “get up ya weak dog”, again Fletch giving away 50 for being “demostrative” and of course we know that Jetta was the 1st & only player to be pilloried for staging.
I’m sorry to say the standard of umpiring coming through the junior comps isn’t giving me hope. Sons game today had some absolute howlers including a kid getting called for running too far literally 5 steps after bouncing. Worst part was it was an obvious farkup that drew a lot of negative noise from the crowd which in turn saw a doubling down of terrible decisions that all went 1 way. I’m not sure if humility can be trained into umpires but its something thats sadly missing.

What about when Langford, also against Freo, held/buffeted a man under the ball who was too far forward, in the goal square, stepped back, took a simple overhead mark and strolled in and goaled. Free kick - “you’ve got to contest the mark”…WTF
