Not the worst, but Gil had to make sure he rewarded Gordon for backing him up and leading the clubs against Essendon over the Saga fallout.

I think it was more about punishing Sydney for taking Buddy. The AFL also wanted the fairy-tale of a team breaking such a long drought & I’ve only ever met 3 AFL umpires & all barracked for the dogs with 1 actually saying the umps identify as underdogs. It couldn’t have happened to a better club (well except Carl/Coll) but fark Sydney they have been spoonfed for 20 years. I actually hate Sydney & Brisbane the most as I see them as the epitome of a corrupt competition. Every possible advantage they have been given.

I’d agree with this. The old 'as long as you use your forearms and not your hands was completely nonsensical. The game should reward the player who takes front position. Nowadays the defender plays behind, shoves the player out of position while the help defender takes an easy “intercept” mark. It’s celebrated, but it’s against the historical spirit of the game where a player playing in front is rewarded.

Anyway, Healy isn’t everyone’s cup of tea but I reckon he’s spot on here. Downgrading and neglecting for years now the age old push in the back rule (particularly by this out the back shoving the man under the ball or into a pack caper) and presto … big problems and big injuries now occurring. Who’d have thunk it?

Not the AFL honchos, or Steve McBurney or ex- EFC GM of footy now in the firing line, Josh Mahoney who says “we haven’t a problem with the push in the back”. Wot? Broken jaw, AC joint etc. already pre R0 without even looking back on last 2-3 years’ incidences.

Bring it back and ASAP I reckon. Protect the player in front making the play but penalise any feigning. Stop these cowardly shoves on a player from an oppo out of position and causing real danger.

It’s an easy decision.

They went through a lot of pain to tighten up the interpretation and then once everyone got use to it they dropped it and took the rule back to grey. One of the stranger rule adjustments that’s occurred in recent years really
