Blitz Birders

Some random shots from the last few weeks

Some of BH’s shots from our recent trip to the North West.

#Rufous Field Wren - Lake Tyrrell. Usually a shy bird, only a handful of sightings on BH’s site this year, this songbird sat on a shrub near the carpark and sang its little heart out. Possibly my fav pic of the year.

#Crested Bellbird - Hopetoun region. Lifer. One of the heard but not seen birds. BH had started to call it her nemesis bird so she was rapt to finally get the shot.

#Mulga Parrot – Yarrara

#Blue Bonnets – Sea Lake

#Mallee Ringneck – Red Cliffs

#Emus – Murray Sunset NP

#Purple-backed Fairywren - Kings Billabong. Very fond of this pic.

This Raptor war pic is from a few weeks ago. Whistling Kites, which are large birds themselves, driving off a massive Wedgie at Carrum Downs.

#Greater Sand Plover, Stockyard Point – This lifer was the birders’ celebrity bird of last fortnight as evidenced by the packed carpark at Stockyard Point and the throng of birder paparazzi on the beach a few ks away. Not sure if waders excite the general public but it had BH in hyper mode. A rare one indeed that hasn’t been seen in Vic at all for a few years, and hasn’t been reported since we were there.

#Olive Whistler, Wicks Reserve The Basin – Normally shy, this songbird was so mesmerised by the the hanging plant it let BH take a series of close ups.

#250 Buff-rumped Thornbill - Old Distillery Dam Kamarooka. Tiny little thing for the milestone.

#Spotted Pardalote - Crusoe Reservoir. Usually shy, this stunner sat in the sun and said take my pic. Maybe my fav bird?

#Orange-Bellied Parrot – Western Treatment Plant. Early morning winter weekend trip to the WTP with low expectations but a need to get out of the house. Feels like we have been up and down this stretch dozens of times. And we have. Snail’s pace and semi dozing when BH’s hand goes up like an order from the Gods and I brake as softly as I can. Can you see it? she whispers when she knows she has the shot. I had, it was only 10 metres away. Sat there warming itself in the cold morning sun for around 10 minutes and then another one turned up. The WTP was otherwise busy but this road was like something out of “Omega Man”. Note the bands.
Truly magical.

#Green Finch – WTP. 2 Lifers in one chance visit, time to buy extra tatts tickets.

Maybe a green catbird?
@GRR will have a better idea.
Nice pics.

Gang-gang Cockatoo at Ruffey Lake Park, Templestowe.

Usually come across about a dozen of them on our morning dog walk.

They prefer to hang around in gangs.

Thanks, that had crossed my mind but the green tinge was throwing me off.

Got onto this uncommon visitor to North-East Victoria recently - a glamorous adult male Blue-winged Parrot.

People might be familar with the Blue-winged Parrot’s sister taxon from the Neophema genus - the critically endangered Orange-bellied Parrot. Like the OBP, Blue-winged Parrot also migrate across the Bass Strait between Tasmania and the mainland.

#Rufous Bristlebird - Blanket Bay. This pic from a few days ago is an absolute monty for next year’s calendar and one of BH’s best shots ever. The bristlebird wandered right up to her in a quiet campground and let the camera weave its magic.

Great photo. The bristles really show clearly.
