I think they are Yellow-tailed black cockatoos. I’ll wait for confirmation from one of our experts.

I just googled and that seems correct. Impressive looking birds , the Hakea looks healthy as well.

Magnificent critters to see, it’s a bit startling to realise how much bigger they are than white cockies (racist!). I can hear a few in the trees outside as I type this. Very distinctive squeaky door call.

Yes, they were huge, at least 60 cm head to tail I think.
I didn’t realise how big from watching them fly past.
A much more pleasant call than the Sulphur Crested and Corellas.
kinda looks more like a Grey rather than Pied from your shots.

I’m no expert, I usually take the shots, then try to ID the bird on the internet.
I have some other shots, I’ll post some.
They had a young one with them too.

Warning this might be distressing, it was for me!!!
BH just told me about a report she read of multiple dead magpies in recent times which hit home for me because I’ve had to remove 2 dead adult magpies from the reserve out the back in the last 2 weeks, neither of which appeared to have been attacked. Lived here 3 decades and these are the first 2 dead magpies I’ve seen out the back. Lots or rabbits at the moment, and rats of course. Hope it’s a coincidence and not Aholes putting down baits but I suspect the latter.
I read a report today about that happening, I think it was in Brisbane.
The most scary reason would be bird flu.

BH just told me she thinks sea birds and water fowl are more likely to be prone to bird flu. My fear is the Magpies will go for the baits or the victims of baits.

I have no idea if there is any connection but there has been an major issue here in Perth with something called “Magpie Paralysis Syndrome” which has been responsible for a lot of magpies dying.
Most juvenile Magpies follow their parents around for months begging for food.
This one has been doing its own hunting from the first time I saw it.
I bet the parents are pleased.

BH has recently been told that fire ant bait is being investigated to see if there is a link to the QLD magpie deaths.
