Blitz Probe Cycling

Yeah I've seen those -- mine don't have one.

If you have a multitool it'll probably have a (sh*tty) spoke tool.

Give it tweak.

Every time i've tried to true a wheel, I've made it worse! :D

Consider it a rite of passage :)

... I did the same on my first too lol.

Ooh new race posted. Three stage race in three Saturdays time. A 2 lap Crit prologue, Crit race and road race. Can’t wait! Addicted to this racing business…

I'm on a wheel hunt.

Does anyone know a source of 23mm wide 700C clincher rims - that's 23 outside diam, 17 inside diam at top?  Aluminium not carbon.  Prefer silver and modest height profile.

Or alternatively a wheel builder who will make me some at reasonable cost?

RE: wheels, sounds like you are after custom jobby's. I'd recommend...

Rims - H Plus Son Archetype or Kinlin XC-279

Hub - On a budget Shimano's, Have some money to spend White Industry or Alchemy hubs.

Spokes - How much you weigh? What use? CXrays are quite exxy, I'd probably opt for double butted round spokes of Sapim or DT.

Builders - Cant really recommend as I build my own, but http://xlr8wheels.com.au has been getting good feedback on BNA of late.

TWE, well he's pretty overpriced, people rave about him, allot of his wheels are just using the same generic Asian components as no namers use. Nothing spesh.

Thanks very much for this.  TWE seem to have starting price over $500.  But I spoke to Josh at xlr8 - he seems to be pretty good and helpful and is a fan of 23mm rims.  So we'll see how that goes.

I don't want to spend a lot because it's an old steel frame bike anyway.  Issues for me are ride stability over ultra fast / lightness - and being able to handle less than ideal road surfaces - i.e. wet, unsealed and bluestone pitchers, plus I'm between 95-100 kg so won't be scrimping on the stainless steel spoke count.

But I am surprised at LBS shooting themselves in foot.  If I already have 23mm wide rims with 23mm tyre and I am moving to 25mm tyre, why would I want a new 19-20mm rim?  Particularly with all research suggesting wider is better.

However since you build you own wheels, how big a deal is it to reco my old wheels and keep these as spares.  For example pull the hubs apart and put in new bearings if needed, replace the spokes and put it all back together.  I have trued wheels before but I imagine starting from scratch including getting the offset dish in rear wheel correct might be a fair bit harder.

Yep 19-20mm with 25mm probably wont even be 25mm when inflated, from my experience it will also have a bulb shape that negates the reason of going wide for superior cornering and ride qual in the first place, to be honest there is not an LBS I even trust, some are so entrenched in the past and 'old tech' its scary what comes out of their mouths.

On a budget hows this...

Rims - Velocity A23

Hubs - Shimano 105 28/32h

Spokes - DT Competiton up front, DT Champion on the rear.

That's about as 'budget' as I'd recommend.

Replacing the bearings is easy if you have the tools - a bearing puller and press, and assuming you know exactly which spec of bearings to get?

I always encourage anyone to try their hand at wheelbuilding, it's not that hard, just requires some time, patience & common sense. If I can anyone can :)

Does require a few specific tools to make things allot easier though.

Re hubs, have a look around Bicycle Market and BNA. Upgraded the hubs in my RS80 wheels to a nice pair of Dura Ace for $200 on BNA. They had 2000k in them already, but roll super smooth and are easily the cheapest and best upgrade I could have made.

Ordered a new knog today. Anyone had experience with delivery times from Evans Cycles in UK?

Blardy cold this morning. 4C when I headed out. Struggled to get the legs going at all.

Lol. You guys are either really tough, or really silly. Too cold for moi to do anything.

Actually quite warm out here this morning. Thought I was doing good pace, too. Until Strava said NOPE. Still, decent 90km ride this morning.

Had to cut it short at just over 50.

+1 organised a few things for me to do.

Ha! I’ve been going as flat out off the bike as I was on since I got home

Thanks.  Yes Josh at XLR8 suggests Velocity A23 rim as well.  He is still looking for hubs for me.  I doubt he'll support me getting anything too "budget" since he is going to put his build decal as well.

Yes I'll probably get the tools and have a crack at reco and respoking my old wheels as spares or for gravel and rock hopping.  The nearest LBS with a workshop is 60km away so it makes sense to be as self reliant as I can be.

Also thanks for your suggestions RedNBlackEyed, I'll keep an eye out.  Although my spares will have 36 holes and narrower drop out spacing than most modern hubs which might limit my choices.

So it was 5.7 on the weather station, but warming up a little just before six. Won’t need the booties or beanie this morning I thought, ■■■■■■ wrong, down to 2C at Watson Creek had me regretting it! Anyway a nice ride out to Sugarloaf, apart from the cold.

Closing in on a final design, think this might be it.

Edit: Also I'll be ordering these from Tineli this time because I have a Tineli kit from my accountant and it's super frigging top notch. Also I'll be ordering bib shorts for the same reason, will put up a design of them as well.

Hmmm...

So the guys from Tineli are perhaps interested in sending some kit design work my way... :)

I prefer the sash and stripe styling in the version on the hangar it looks more a designed feature, this one looks like it could be a bad print run accident.  Do you have colour references for the various reds - i.e. CMYK, RGB, #??????  to see how subtle (or not) they are.  I am not sure how accurately my screen is reproducing the intended colour variations.

Not so keen on wearing a "probe this" bib.  But I am amused by the prospect of having a small "ASADA THIS!" along very bottom rear tail of jersey.

Can't they do black bib upper section?  I only have 1 bib but it's all black.

LOL. I’m not putting that on the bum. It’s a joke.

The colours on that design in the hangar aren’t super accurate. The red will be hella red, the slightly darker stripes will be only slightly darker.
