Blitz Probe Cycling

Just over a year ago, a young and well known local tri-athlete was killed on a morning ride on the Cook Highway, just north of Cairns. Yesterday the driver, drunk at the time of the incident, was sentenced to 3.5 years in jail and will be released after just 12 months.

I am utterly speechless.

A Canadian motorist who killed a 17-year-old cyclist in a late-night collision is suing his family for emotional distress, claiming he was to blame for the accident because he failed to wear a high-visibility vest.

In the lawsuit, Sharlene Simon says her "enjoyment of life has been irretrievably lessened" since the accident in which Brandon Majewski was killed and his friend Richard McLean, 16, seriously injured in October 2012.

She is now suing both teenagers, along with Jake Roberts, 16, who was also knocked off his bike in the collision near the town of Innisfil, Ontario, but was unhurt, for more than 1 million Canadian dollars ($976,000).

Yes, have read that one.

The two incidents are quite different though, as the young-kids-riding-bikes (NOT cyclists) were pretty well invisible and allegedly all over the road at the time. I see no reason for the woman to be suing, but cyclists (and people-that-ride-a-bike) do need to take some responsibility when out on the road.

Tanya Roneberg, on the other hand, was simply changing a tube when hit by some fool almost double the legal BAC, in broad farking daylight.

That sucks.

A 61 year old was hit and run on a bike recently here, they’ve never found the driver. He died on the side of the road.

Scum bags.

We have ■■■■■■ dropping tacks on Kew boulevard here, deliberately targeting cyclists. It's been going for 10 weeks now and it's costing Vic roads a fortune to clean up the mess.

Go to 1m30 on the lateline clip from last friday below.

I got something about this on my fb feed. They're (Vic Roads) conducting infra-red number plate ID or somesuch, yeah??

You really gotta ask, wtf is wrong with people. You can imagine these retards standing around a BBQ, chest beating about how awesome it is knowing a bunch of cyclists are getting injured, laughing, joking etc...

Mates and I were discussing last night, it's getting to the point where there will be all out war. Carry a 38 snub in the jersey pocket and if some motorist gets too close, just take out a tyre or two. In the meantime, I have a six point five kilo, carbon fibre axe between my legs and I am dying for some carnt to get out of his car and come at me...

Braking Bad

Police in West Virginia responding to a tip-off intercepted a man on a bike this week – and discovered he was carrying a portable meth lab that was operating at the time.

Dennis Eugene Baker Jr, aged 31 and from War, McDowell County, has been charged with operating a meth lab and unlawful possession of a controlled substance, reports the Register-Herald.

“We had an anonymous call saying a gentleman was on a bicycle with a backpack carrying a portable meth lab,” explained Chief Deputy Roger Deel from the McDowell County Sheriff‘s Department.

“We ended up locating him in Shaft Hollow in the Caretta area. He was on a bicycle and had a backpack and all of the components, and actually had a live meth lab cooking in the backpack.”

That created danger for the officers called to disable the portable meth lab, since there is a high risk of explosion associated with them.

“We disabled it,” said Chief Deputy Deel. “We‘ve got five people that are trained in that now. I‘m one of them. We went in and disabled the lab and, of course, placed him under arrest for operating a meth lab.”

After his arrest on Wednesday, Baker told police that the meth was for his own use. Officers also found pills on him, which gave rise to the charge of unlawful possession of a controlled substance.

The sheriff‘s office added that it is the first time they have come across a meth lab being operated on a bicycle.

Nice job with time lapse photography and sound to record the Audax Alpine Classic earlier this year.  It is in same region as the 3 peaks ride for those interstate who don't know Victoria all that well.

If anyone is after cheap training or riding jerseys, Cycling Victoria is dumping some leftover community ride jerseys for $25 + $5 postage.

Jerseys are manufactured by Seight.  I've already got one from one of the rides. Quality is comparable to first lot of blitz jerseys.  I'm getting another for that price.

If you want the size charts they are probably on Seight website.

Part time work and seriously sh!thouse weather have both conspired to keep me off the bike of late, but managed to punch out 102km on my day off today. First 40 or so K were agony, not because of the driving headwind, but because my butt needed to re-mould itself to my saddle. Considered more than once turning around, but once beaten into submission, no further problems.

Planning a Gran Fondo ride this coming Sunday, weather permitting. Feels good to be back on it!

Good stuff.

I've been trying to average around 300km per week. So far so good, although it sometimes hard to get motivated in Winter.

That’s me. First proper training ride tmrw since spending two weeks on a tropical holiday, before the real winter hit.

Layers.

I am _hurting_

ah, but it's a good hurt.

Here's something.

There's a purpose built CX track being built at Essendon Fields.

Visit the boys for training and then go for a ride?

Cool, my old stomping grounds. Will have to check it out next time i'm down, plans look pretty neat.

You got a CX bike?

Not sure if this belongs in the HCT. We could just keep it our little secret ;)
