For me, Essendon Football Club doesn’t really exist at this point as anything other than an abstract concept that has the potential of being returned to, and fulfilled as an actual entity. Sick of the facade.

Me too, all image, no substance and no soul. Hopefully we can turn it round in the near future.

I know it will never be as it was, but hoping a new soul will develop and we can get back to just enjoying our team playing.

I think we are at an interesting juncture.

Bomber was an integral part of the fabric and tradition of the EFC and passed it on to a lot of other players. Hird obviously was too. This tradition lived on through the father son’s in particular, those being Fletch and Jobe. I think Jobe was our heart and soul and carried us through the lean post last finals win era to this point.

Now it is the post Jobe, post Fletch era, we are also at last in the post saga era, which I think is most notably is marked by the arrival of Stringer and Smith as fairly big ego’s who make a big mark on who we are as a team.

This has interrupted the pecking order and evolution of the leadership succession. Looking back to 2016 when Zerrett talked about a pact with Joe and Hepp and wanting to inspire the banned players to come back, we were showing heaps of soul even without a lot of success.

Now with no Jobe and Hepp being nominally the main man but with BJ gesticulating in the background and Joe being good friends with Stringer, and changing the chemistry with JD and Hooker, and Myers being one of our generals but copping it because he is not seen by many as a part of our future even though he is the type of player we are lacking. Zerrett has had some physical on field run ins with Stringer documented in our training reports where he came off second best.

This process is an inevitable part of change, especially with the likes of Jobe, Hocking, Stants and Howlett going and Stringer, Smith and Saad parachuted into the best 22 this is a seismic shift in the leadership of the team. Couple this with a bit of expectation that we should be a better side and underperforming and we no longer have the aftermath of the Saga holding us together to overcome.

It is more like the smoking ruins of the Saga are now behind us, and we are left to ponder who are we now?

We are in a state of flux, but I feel like Woosha may be the rebound girlfriend. Maybe we don’t finally get serious until the next.

Nicely put @SCarey, I agree and especially the bit I’ve bolded. We are certainly pondering who we are and what we stand for, so far this season, I’ve been following on automatic pilot.

Poor Woosha re the rebound girlfriend, always trying to please and not really making any head way.

I don’t know what to think re our state at the moment, apart nothing good lasts forever, but nothing bad last forever either.

Lets hope even if we don’t win, which is highly likely that we are at least competitive tomorrow, maybe we might be able to get a bit of ourselves back.

Sound like the club needs to go down to the Hanger, get on some quality MDMA and really have a good bonding session and talk to each other and hug it out. Then get back to business of being a professional football club.

And it’s why the AFL has a policy regarding illicit drug use by players negotiated with the AFLPA - no names, no clubs, but the policy does involve standing down on mental health grounds after X strikes. There is no reason why staff at clubs and AFL would fall outside the average range of use by those in other workplaces.

Most workplaces don’t except if there are safety aspects. They don’t see themselves as acting for the police. Some ( including where I have worked) require it to be declared on a confidential basis, but not a sackable offence unless convicted.

Yes you’re right but that means he should have more compassion/empathy for those who are in similar situations. Yet his statements continually contradict this position you would expect him to have, hence why people think he’s a flog.
