So don’t be too disappointed if they don’t play like theirs a flag on the line tomorrow
Scott was really clear in the interview about expectations this year. Watch it again if need be. They aren’t putting a few wins before building blocks. I don’t think they’re talking like a finals outfit this year.
It’s all the forwards. If they aren’t impacting the scoreboard, then they need to be capable of doing other things.
Most are fixating on the ‘too tall’ comment and ignoring the following sentence which was about mobility.
Sydney played the whole year with McLean, McDonald and Amartey and whilst they didn’t win the premiership they were successful more often than not with those talls. What makes them different is that they are mobile enough to allow leading lanes to occur for other forwards.
For us, Jones does this very well. He plays a very selfless game. Caddy can do it. Draper isn’t as mobile as Caddy and Jones, but he will crash the pack and bring it down to the small forwards. 2MP is not a pack marking forward, so he relies on the others to open up the space for leading lanes.
That’s why the Bryan / Draper / Caddy / Jones ruck and forward mix is a close watch through pre-season and how we select the team going into the opening round.
I suspect it’s the same with the backline. Between McKay, Ridley & Reid that’s about as tall as you want to get given McKay is a bit more of a stay at home defender and try and get the intercept contested mark. Ridley plays ‘above his height’ of 192cm but is definitely mobile. Reid is mobile too.
Love how he used Hawthorne as an example of how things can turn around, they suffered being in the bottom rungs of the ladder but have been able to claw their way out, Hawkes fans have suffered enough, it’s their turn, be patient bomber fans, it’s coming.
I quite enjoyed Cal Twomeys interview, except, OK, we turned the page, and there was scarcely a mention of what has been/ will be done to stop the second half season fade outs.
Make no mistake amiable or not, there is pressure on Scott, but thats made it easier to deal with, since we are widely viewed by pundits as a bottom 4 side. It even mignt be a good thing, with 2 top 10 picks possible in Octobler. They can hardly pressure Scott for delivering the bottom 4 result they all predict!
But a poor result will take Scott into a contract year, needing massive improvement, just as our playing stocks are reamed out to kick off the Tassie side.
I think he was pretty clear on that - they have internal metrics which show whether you are a good team or not, we were a ■■■■ team that was lucky in the first half of the season and a somewhat better team that was unlucky in the second half. You want to get good enough that luck doesn’t matter
Happy he’s our guy… but he needs to stop the BS catch phrases. “Be a Don”???
Is this replacing the “Essendon Edge”?
Is “Be a Don” the cultural framework with “Essendon Edge” the in-game sub-strategy ?
Both were thrown out there with near zero context / detail. Coach and club are terrible on giving genuine insight. It’s like they don’t want to be held accountable to anything specific.
Anyone else a little underwhelmed by this Brad Scott interview ‘prospectus’? I know he tread fairly safely, but not a lot of insight into the medium term list strategy…nor acknowledgement that previous seasons team selection seemed geared to winning ‘now’.
I’d like a bit more visibility on the list strategy tbh. (And I’m a supporter of Brad).
If he had done what was needed in his first year in charge, we could almost be at the stage Hawthorn is at right now. But he completely wasted 2 years, hopefully he doesn’t waste a 3rd
Drafted 7 players and moved on a couple of the older players now we are one of the youngest teams in the comp if that’s not going youth path then i don’t know what is
Dodo had a lot of power especially with Sheedy at board level in his corner. i reckon ■■■■ was right Brads hands were tied in his first 2 years
All in the past now hopefully this year is the start of that rebuild/refresh what ever you want to call it
