Brad Scott - yeah, whatever (Part 3)

Why would some one like Longmire want to coach us knowing that 3 years into the job he’s at risk of getting the sack and ruin his coaching legacy

It’s time we stop blaming it all on the coach it’s the players and recruitment that needs to be held accountable here

I’d love him.
But he does play his favourites too.
Also makes rookies work hard for a game.
Regardless of whether there is a spot in the 23 for him or not.
And they don’t develop in their ‘preferred position’.
So I’d say that Thursday night team selections won’t be an enjoyable as some would hope.

Definitely does drive standards though which would make a huge difference.

Why would Longmire come here? He’d have to deal with lazy players and half the fanbase would be calling for him to be sacked by the end of his second season, most likely

I think people massively underestimate how little respect the rest of the league actually has for the essendon football club.

coming to us is literally a career killer.

there is no actual carrot to come to essendon as a coach unless you are untried like rutten, a failed coach like scott or just someone looking for a pension like woosha.

nobody with any real pedigree is looking at essendon as any kind of positive destination.

Sounds great but he would come with even greater expectation from fans to perform quickly and if that didn’t happen he’d been gone to. I’m not ride or die with Scott by any means but he’s done as a good a job as any coach could with the clown show he walked into.

We all blame Dodoro for the list being bereft of talent but Scott should get the lemonade and sars for failing to make finals in his second season with that same list :man_shrugging:.

We have a new CEO, a new recruiting manager, and a lot of additional staff added to the coaching department. Changes have been made for the better and I think it will start to turn unfortunately not as quick as some would like obviously.

Fans have every right to be filthy with how this season has panned out and if they think that’s Scott’s fault they are more than entitled to hold that opinion. I’m of the opinion that he needs the time and sacking another coach will only send us even further backwards.

The big problem for him is we have shown a bit in the first of half of both seasons which has us as supporters daring to dream only to be disappointed. It’s the hope that kills you.

Maybe the penny is beginning to drop? Teams listed this week

An interesting thing with the list and Dodoro’s picks. I’ve never seen an article or electronic media report after any draft that says how poorly Essendon did.

I’m happy for Dodoro to be moved on but the ones that I blame mostly…and who seem to escape any criticism…are the ones in charge of player development.

In recent years, we have drafted Cox, Perkins, Reid, Hobbs and Tsatas in the first round.

Can anyone here state that these players have shown any improvement since they were drafted?

I don’t believe that any of those five are hacks…but not one of them has taken any significant steps forward or made a spot in the team their own.

This can’t be stated enough…it takes time to build success.

Both Mark Thompson and Damien Hardwick won their first flags in their eighth year of coaching.

Clubs that repeatedly change their coach do not win flags.

That’s not to say that Scott is the perfect coach…he annoys the hell out of me with his refusal to state publicly that the players are at fault when games like this most recent one are lost.

I don’t want to hear about the process…or the gradual improvements that get measured…I, like everyone else, want to see improvement purely in the wins column.

Just to slightly expand on this, Melbourne’s flag occurred eight seasons after they pulled a hard reset and hired Paul Roos as coach, and Hawthorn’s dynasty began after Clarko was there for eight years (they weren’t able to sustain the success they had in 2008). The Pies flag in 2010 occurred just slightly longer (10 years) since Mick first arrived there, and it seemed to be set to be a dynasty before the handover.

We are coming from a very long way back.

While I have issues with Brad’s coaching, sacking him now will just provide the club with another excuse going into 2025 with the promise of maybe another sugar hit. The entire club, in particular this administration needs to eat a huge bowl of ■■■■. Undeniably, clearly, eat ■■■■ so hard there is no escaping from it, that the abject failures of past administrations, draft picks and soft-rebuilds are inescapable to everyone.

Maybe Brad would survive such a hard crash to the bottom of the ladder? I doubt it, but it would take many above him with him, hopefully including Dodoro.

Brad is the man to change the culture of the club, he is the strong leader we have needed, just the mental fragility of the place is so deep, it will take years of stability to get outta it.

If only we could take team selection outta his hands and have a ‘selection committee’, I’d be wrapped.

Our Reserves side made 3 VFL Preliminary finals (and 2 Semi’s) in 6 season, prior to Covid.

Don’t f*cking tell me that poor development has hindered talent.

Hey jono…imo, poor development has hindered our chances of success.

If you disagree, argue about the players I have mentioned…not some useless stat from 4-5 years ago.

I don’t mind Brad as coach, I thought he was going to be more of a hard ass but now I’m not so sure. Good thing about getting a new coach though is they usually bring other people with them, fitness or assistant coaches. If not the year of their move then during the next few years. Brad has come from an administration role, so doubt we get the added value of very good support staff.

For me it’s list management. Our list just isn’t good enough.

I don’t think Brad would have signed up for a full re-build two years into his deal. I believe it’s the right way to go, and my guess is we’ll need to find a new coach.

I’m just surprised nobody has suggested we poach sam “I didn’t really win a brownlow” mitchell

You mean half the players would be calling for him to be sacked.

Yeah, but you’re just being “resultist”…

Scott isn’t going anywhere.

Rutten was sacked for political reasons as much as on field reasons I suspect.

Barham is wedded to the current football department and there is nowhere near enough noise and dissatisfaction with that as a whole to generate a board coup from the inside.

While it was only rutten’s second year it was 7 years (?) of brash, x, woosh/rutten

I’d be surprised if Scott didn’t see his term out. It’s almost more likely that he’d get sick of it and us and leave within 4 years.

The problem scott faces is the list and how he can turn it over with so many long term contracts in place. He’s stuck with a lot of the pieces that ran out on Saturday. The question is exactly how many pieces are needed to make the list more competitive.

Obviously a gun small forward would help (at least one). A gun distributor at half back (at least one). A gun key defender who can use the ball at least a bit. A mobile key forward with genuine size. Probably an excellent playmaker who can hurt by foot in the middle

2026 best 22

McGrath McKay rids
??? ??? Redman(?)

Duursma parish ???(Roberts)
Bryan Caldwell Durham

Martin Langford merrett
Kako caddy ???

??? Tsatas ??? ???

Draper might a piece to move to try and fill other holes. Far from certain that happens obliviously. Wright is also on contract until 2027 but I think it’s increasingly likely he moves sooner rather than later

And Obviously there’s a bunch of guys already on the list who need to take a another step - Perkins, Hobbs, Saad, Reid, Hayes, Cox, Jones - maybe one of hail Mary’s will work out - Hunter, Baldwin, Tex, a Davey

It’s going to be a really interesting draft/trade period this year.

Redman, mcgrath, ridley and McKay are some of the worst defenders going around (ridley is ok when fit. When, the big word)

That defence is taking us nowhere

Minimum 10 years before we’re good if we run with those guys as the core. 6 for those guys to leave, 3-4 years for the new defence to gel

That’s the most expensive backline in the AFL.

And one of the worst.

Dodoro strikes again.
