Breaking Bad Finale - spoilers

They needed to have her purple jacket in colour. Like the burning cigarette for Kim and Jimmy.

Very enjoyable for mine, and probably the happiest possible ending with all things considered. Saul realising what that phone call had done to Kim, and letting Jimmy take the wheel for just long enough to do the only thing that could win her respect back. It’s a morbid happy ending, but a lovely way for the show and the BB universe to bow out.

This is an interesting thought on the Walt cameos we got in the final season:

Sometimes, when spinoffs bring back characters from the parent series, it’s to remind you of why you liked them in the first place. Both of Walt’s appearances here have instead played up his most insufferable qualities, giving you the worst version of Walter White — or at least the worst version who is not actively bringing physical harm to others. It’s an interesting choice, and perhaps speaks to Gould and Gilligan’s ongoing regret about how much Breaking Bad viewers tended to take Walt’s side on everything.

Very interesting. Personally I feel like the Walt in BCS was just as ■■■■-ish as Walt on BB, however I wasn’t someone who adored him as the hero of BB. In any case, no amount of Walt flashback scenes in BCS could have changed people’s minds about him imo.

I’m pretty happy with that ending.

I felt the Walt cameo was probably the weakest scene, to be honest. The final takeaway was good, though.

Loved the Marie cameo.

And it all ended with Jimmy and Kim.

What a show.

I was a bit underwhelmed but on reflection it was a great ending. Last week the intersection of Kim and Jesse could also have been the final scene

Really enjoyed the finale. For me I still prefer breaking bad but both are brilliant.

On Walter. I did a full rewatch of BB before starting BCS a couple of years ago. The thing that really struck me second time around was how much of an ■■■■■■■■ Walt was. I didn’t recall feeling so strongly the first time around.

I’m pretty happy with the ending.

He could have got 7 years a Saul but took 80 years as Jimmy and did it for Kim.

I liked it. It was never going to be an all guns blazing, shoot a dozen nazi’s finale.

Jimmy/Saul/Gene was a man who manipulated the law in varying degrees depending on his persona. And the law won!

But he now has Kim’s respect and that’s all he ever really wanted. Cost him 80 years, but can now be at piece with himself.

But what an amazing world that was between the two shows. Nothing on tv has captivated and enthralled me so much. Some scenes have shocked me, made me jump. Just brilliantly performed and written tv.

Well done to all involved.

I’m about half way through BB season 5 rewatch and will jump straight into Saul. I guess a lot of the sentimental stuff in the finale will be bought back to me, like talking about Chuck in court with the camera right next to the fizzing Exit sign. No scene was wasted or done without reason. Just brilliant.

Way too much ink has been spilled on this topic in the past, but for sure there was a big group of viewers back in the day who empathised a lot with (middle aged male) anti-heroes like Walt, Tony Soprano, Don Draper, Vic Mackey etc.
All those characters had some sympathetic traits, mostly a dedication to family (and family in italics for Tony) not seen this side of Dom Toretto. But fundamentally they were horrible people who brought pain and suffering to almost everyone in their orbit.
Interestingly, none my friends who came to BB for the first time in the last few years fall into that category - they all despise Walt. I wonder if society has really changed that much over the past decade for them to view the show so differently now to how we did back then. Or maybe the streaming era has just changed how people associate with hate-able TV characters (and if so I reckon House of Cards did a lot of heavy lifting on this lol).

I just realised that the opening scene of the season had the cops throwing the cardboard cutout of Saul into a dumpster.

That’s some juicy foreshadowing.

The bin scene was also a callback to the first season when Jimmy first started pursuing Sandpiper by going through the rubbish.

Yep - definitely that’s what I was asking myself - have my attitudes changed or was I viewing the show differently second time around? For context I loved the Shield and I found Vic Mackey a very dislikeable character. Tony Soprano I probably empathised with a bit more but really disliked the way he treated Camilla and to a lesser extent Christopher. I guess I found it easier to rationalise a lot of his behaviour because he is in the Mob after all.
