Bruce McAvaney hangs up the mic

A bit???

BT has taken over the mantle of Peter Landy - the inaccurate one, only Landy was even worse. The thing that has really grated and the biggest change in his commentary has been his inability to simply make a statement, without adding a tag question on the end, isn’t it?

Like an oldschool band I enjoyed his earlier work to his later.

The last 10 years he was more yelling and coming up with random metaphors.

I am more a fan of the 80s style of commentary, Direct and describing exactly what is going on without all the theatrical “fairytale” rubbish if that makes any sense.

That being said thanks Bruce for being you. Enjoy retirement!

Couldn’t be happier to see him go personally. His style of commentary infuriated me to the point I watched most games he called on mute. The constant question “he’s good isn’t he?” or “that was special wasn’t it?” Drove me insane. Was just never a fan of how he called matches, even when it was full of excitement & passion.

I think he’s a great guy. Who clearly loved the sport & I admire him for that. But I don’t ever want to hear him again.

The problem is the quality of commentators across the board is woeful. BT is awful. Luke Darcy shocking as well. Not a fan of Dwayne Russel either. I don’t mind James Brayshaw too badly to be honest, especially by comparison. Hudson is good but I don’t love him like most seem to. And I’ve never warmed to Gerard Whately ever since he decided to declare himself the moral compass of the AFL.

I’ll probably stick to muting games on & off to make it through unfortunately

Ian Robertson.

After a night game at the G a few years ago, we happened to be following Bruce across the pedestrian walkway with about a thousand other Bomber fans. Needless to say there was much frivolity and banter towards him with many a ‘special’ comment thrown his way. He handled it all very graciously and engaged everyone with a smile on his face. Even the not so pleasant fans who were obviously just trying to get a rise out of him.

Say what you like about him as a commentator, but he certainly seems like a decent bloke.

He definitely seems like a great guy. I mean I’m not into racing but I appreciate this clip. He’s like a little kid. Absolutely love it.

Sounds like there’s be a spot for him in Canberra with that sort of attitude

Bruce rates up there with the great Bill Collins as a commentator in a variety of sports or even into other spheres of entertainment.

I liked Bruce. I feel like there’s a little bit of a void left, even if he wasn’t what he was.

Almost anything is better than the frat boy joke brigade that most AFL commentary has turned into. Really need some new blood, I think.

Adam Papalia from Fox Footy or Jason Bennett who commentates the AFLW

One of them would be a great replacement for Bruce

Brayshaw is good.
Bruce should have left the year after Cometti.

However If 2021 olympics are held, hope Bruce is part of the team.

Hamish Mclachlan? bloody hell, he is the most boring commentator in the game. The stock standard lines are embarrassing.
