Camping

Yep, it’s freaking EVERYWHERE. Specially for kids, the little kiddy ski classes look like they’re in uniforms. Forking out $400 for a kids outfit that they’ll get 1 season out of is madness, so why not.

I’m trying to hold off on buying one of their jackets, like THT I’m trying to convince myself I’m cool, but the pants are black or blue or whatever and pretty plain, they all look the same. Got one of their helmets too, pretty much completely used to wearing it now, to the extent the beanies barely get any usage. Gunna sticker it up, again just that nagging slight embarrassment.

Makes sense for your average Australian ski punter who only gets up for a week or two a year. Wonder when they’ll start doing boards & boots…

My helmet has the name of every mountain I’ve ridden on it. Up to about 30 names now which I like as a nice little reminder of my snow travels. It’s a plain old Protec helmet, but it has served me well and I would never ride without it. My kids both have the Aldi helmets, but I am currently in the process of drawing up some stencils to airbrush onto them. My son (about to turn 8) wants me to turn his into a Captain America helmet with the “A” on the front and the little stylised wings on the side, and my daughter (5) wants fairy wings on the side of hers. My circle of friends/cousins/workmates have kids at varying ages and I’ve found a high proportion have bought Aldi ski stuff over the years, so it’s actually pretty easy to swap/loan/on-trade gear as it always gets grown out of before it gets worn out. Helps save a few dollars and ensures the kids have stuff that fits.

And on the embarrassment thing, it’s funnier when you see people with all the expensive gear who have NFI what they’re doing than seeing people in Aldi gear that are shredding. It may be blissful ignorance on my behalf, but I reckon it’s pretty widely accepted now that the Aldi gear is pretty good quality and value and sure as hell won’t be going away quickly. Not all of us can be sponsored by Oakley and Quicksilver…

Some people are snobby about Aldi stuff, and having mega-specs overall, but I’ve boarded 3 of the main 4 resorts in Aus, and had fairly ■■■■■■ conditions at times, and I suck so I’m on the ground half the time - and never felt I’ve been close to pushing my gear too hard. And I use cheapish Rip Curl & Quiksilver stuff, mostly 5k rated, 10k max

Maybe if you’re in -15º and blizzards, but in Australia, that’s not gunna happen.

I’ve been a boarder for 15 years, but that doesn’t mean I haven’t had an embarrassing chairlift stack or seven. Once you start trying to wrangle kids on skis whilst riding a board you add a whole new level of complexity to a simple chairlift dismount. Actually it can be quite hilarious…

Never been this bad though:

Snowboarders are a menace.

Particularly when they derail your camping thread.

Wrecking a camping thread is one thing, causing a mass pile-up at the end of the chair lift because they can’t co-ordinate a successful dismount is another.

To be fair, I’ve done both.

I didn’t pick you as a 2-planker

That’s unreal.

I didn't pick you as a 2-planker
You bet I am.

Embrace the slope. Embrace it.

do you grab the side of your boot when you do an air?

If I’m grabbing the side of my boot it probably means I’m out of control.

Such campness…

When I was kid my family used to camp at Wilsons Prom for two weeks in Jan every year (I'd be surprised if there weren't other Blitzers that did this every year as well). We used to take a roll of hesian and spread it on the ground and peg it down to keep the dust down. Worked a treat, and we always had the tent flys extra secured. Probably my favourite childhood memories are from the Prom. Surfing, bushwalking, the open-air cinema, chasing girls, riding bikes. Planning on taking my family for camping down there later this year. I even proposed to my wife down there, sitting up on the big boulders at Pillar point watching the sunset. Who says romance is dead?

Are you intending on chasing girls again and can I hang out with you if so.

Cue the Benny Hill music…

Oh look! There’s a nipple on the bald man’s head!

Hahaha, remember when this thread was about going camping?
