Can this 2018 Team be as good as 2000? Nope!

I was at that game and went from hungover as fark to hammered as fark in the space of an hour. You will probably never see another game like it.

l am loath to compare teams across different eras, it is pretty pointless. The last time we tried doing something like this on BBlitz was comparing the 1985 and 2000 flag winning sides. l’m convinced the 1985 side is the strongest Essendon has ever fielded, Free Spirit said otherwise. He said he was going to work out a valid way to compare them, l am still waiting to hear from him on how that comparison is working out. l was willing to concede that if the 2 teams played in 2000, then that team would have won. They were on a mission that year and nothing was going to stop them. l should have put a small wager on them winning, like my house! In any other year l contend that the 1985 team would have won, if the 1985 team met the 2000 team in any other year, in any other year, l believe the 1985 team would triumph.

As for the 2018 team? Any consideration as to the efficacy of their credentials are more than a little premature at this stage. There is talent aplenty for sure, but let them settle into their own identity first.

How is that on-ball brigade in the '85 side ?

I wonder how our 2016 side would have gone against the 1985 side?

Think of the match ups.

J Merrett V Baker
Bird v Watson
Polkinghorne v Thompson

Exciting to think about.

That was the one where Pev pushed their doctor over wasn’t it?

that game sucked, we came from 4 goals down twice in the first half, then they blew us away in the 3rd

That 2003 game is just about the loudest sustained atmosphere I have ever heard at Etihad.

This was on digg recently and is a very good explanation.

If the 2000 team was to play the 2018 team tomorrow…
The free kick count would be 0-0.

Am I doing it right?

That’s fair enough. Agree the potential for this list to be successful is very palpable. We are getting there, finally.

So let’s time capsule this thread and open it in 2020 with BomberBlitz version 362.

Nope. It’d be 100-100… all paid in the back line.

No.

I reckon there’d be zero free kicks For but 100 Against. Which from the above ‘divide by zero’ conversation means there’s an indeterminate number of frees.

I may be over-thinking this.

By having a good look at the 2000 team, really shows the holes in the current 2018 side.
the ball use of Mercuri, Long, Rama, Caracella, Hird, Lloyd, Fletcher.
the gap is massive

I like threads like this that start good conversation. I think he is comparing them on individual player talent, no doubt as a ‘team’ 2000 would be all over them. I do think on paper though that 2018 is a really strong team, unfortunately these days on paper doesn’t mean all that much, otherwise the dogs and tigers wouldn’t have made the top 8 in their premiership seasons.
Hopefully we can adopt the tough, ruthless edge that the 2000 team had, that being said though they had their choking moment too the year prior in 99.

Annoyed me so much when he said 1 minus 0 minus 0 minus 0 gets to 0 in infinity steps. No, each time it remains at 1. You’re not getting closer, not even by an infinitesimal amount.

I’ve been searching for years of video for that. It needs to be a gif.
