Very interesting perspective regarding EVs. Admittedly the presenter is English, but I’d say the drawbacks raised would be applicable here.
Mrs Fox had a minor accident today in her Lexus. A large concrete post jumped out and clipped her passenger side mirror, snapping it off at the base.
Now this iis a mirror that not only has a nice piece of glass mirror in in but it retracts when parked, and has all sorts of cameras and sensors in it, so that you can keep those pesky posts at bay.
So should I have been surprised when I called Lexus to replace fix it, to be told that the whole mirror assembly has to be replaced, it will take 6 weeks to get one from Japan and it will only cost $5,109.65 !!!
Of course, you can still driv ethe car, but they are all sorts of constant warning and alarms going off that cannot be switched off until the faullt is fixed.

Over $5,000 for a side mirror? I’d look into that. Take time to reflect, probably.
Sometimes these things can be got second-hand. Mrs Shelton had her side mirror snapped off by a passing driver and it was replaced with a second-hand one, colour-matched, for very little by the local service people. Of course a Suzuki Swift is not a Lexus and the mirror had no bells and no whistles.
It has been talked about and the research and money is being spent to sort it all out.
The no home thing is a bit of an issue, but it’s really how long it takes to charge in public as opposed to having to recharge in public. If you use a liquid now, you don’t refuel at home after all. Chargers are getting faster. Things like disability usage really isn’t an issue cause we fixed normal parking with disability parking, so we’ll have disabled recharging spaces.
Everything will pretty much come along as usage uptake grows. I see it all like the transition of many big tech through the years (steam to diesel trains, horse to motorcar).
Biggest issue is really the upfront cost and it’s more a European issue for now given they have a deadline to transition, which we don’t have here.
Long range is also a bit of a furphy. Yes some people do do a lot of km per week but the average in Australia is 36.4km per day.
So whilst I agree there are still some issues to overcome electric will takeover. How fast that transition will take will be down to costs. We are not too far away from that magical 40k mark.
Hydrogen to me is the one thing that won’t take off for public use. BIG stuff like Tankers / Cargo ships definitely a use there, but for your average car, no.

All because they use such ■■■■■■ plastic it goes yellow and cloudy over time.
My kids have a Honda about 10 years old that got it’s driver’s side mirror taken off by another car in the street along with another one parked in front of it. Luckily the driver was responsible and stopped and their car has been off the road for two months and have just been told it has been fixed and ready for pickup. Also luckily they have been given a hire car to use in the interim.
Supply chains are a bit stretched at the moment.
can you not claim that on insurance?

Drawbacks yes but I think there would be solutions to most of the problems mentioned even though there’s so much there.
One thing I don’t get for incentives that could simply remain without a government cost is stricter emission standards and with that fuel quality standards on new vehicles.
For the whole apartment users thing.
I reckon workplaces would be the obvious choice to incentivise installing the 7kwh chargers.
Drive to work then you have your 8 hours of charge there if you can’t get it at home.
Or a commuter carpark or other places people leave their car for a long period(round of golf anyone?)
I mean it’s much better isn’t it to generally charge a car during the day than at night right?
Logic: Renewables being more available during the day as a percentage of the power grid or even locally on the charging site?
Then If you public transport all week instead of driving to work and only use your car on weekends then maybe the drip feed from a normal Power point over a week is absolutely fine. No expensive EV infrastructure required caining the grid, just a power point?

I got a 3M kit online which is designed to use with electric drill.
Multiple sands with progressively finer grit, a couple of types of clear coat. A final polish.
This was during lockdown, so I had nothing else to do. Result looked amazing, but only lasts about 18 months.
Yep, we will put in an insurance claim and pay the $500 excess. It will be interesting if Insurance Company accept the quote from Lexus or find a cheaper one somewhere.
Lexus are great cars and service is fantastic and Mrs Foxies RX350 is a fabulous car, but they are expensive, but this is the first issue in 5 years of owning it. I had a Lexus IS200t and it was also a great car.
I do really like my new Tesla 3 though.

Realistically how hard is it for people to charge once a week at a public charging station? (If they live in a flat or something)
Were people complaining about having to have petrol in their garage when they transitioned from horse and cart? Probably. But we got through it.
The big benefit will be having your own solar and charging it for free.
in NSW off peak charging I think is between midnight and 7am and it’s very cheap compared to peak power.
Around 15c kw/h. So if you charge only in off peak time it’s going to be pretty cheap even without solar.(usually midnight til dawn or thereabouts)
There is even some companies that have plans where they have a couple of hours free electricity each week for EV owners with say a three phase rapid charger installed at home too.
