Sorry to say that l never heard of Harry. I was also a draft resister, l refused to register, although my date was called out as part of the draft lottery. The draft and whether or not to register was one of those life defining moments. I chose not to support a cynical war in support of capitalism and reasoned that Vietnam and its people were no threat to life in Australia, l believe l got that decision right and my reasoning was sound. I have since visited that wonderful country and its people 7 times and at one stage considered retiring to there. Things didn’t work out that way, but l have local friends still that l made there.

When I was first in Sydney as a kid, there were newspaper headlines of “Raper out of action” which always made me laugh.

Vietnam is in my list of places to retire. I had friends who went to jail over conscription and friends who went into the Army, went to Vietnam and never recovered from the truama. Gough saved me.

By the time my draft rolled around it was obvious that Gough was going to get in and he had already said that he would scrap conscription, so that made my decision a little easier to make. I would have had no problem going to gaol instead of registering. One guy l went to high school with did register and get conscripted, but never went to Vietnam. It is a stunning country. Let me know when you are going and l will introduce you to a few people.

That’s sad - I remember him well from my Uni days during the late 60s and early 70s. If there was a demo happening, Harry was up to his neck in it.

Who was the bloke who won his case that successfully challenged his conscription on other than general conscientious objector grounds , something like an objection to the Vietnam War?
Albie Langer was batshite crazy. I remember him at demos frothing at the mouth. I saw him on a tram once years ago, he was the tram conductor and still batshite craxy.
My dad only got out of it cause he was a primary producer, apples (go tassie).
The irony is the chemicals they used to mitigate blackberries etc weren’t much different from those used in the scorched earth policy during the conflict.
Looking at him now he may as well have gone.

Any love for Howard Hesseman? Was WKRP a thing here? Shuffled off the mortal coil last week. Showed up in a lot of 80s movies. Had a cameo in Spinal Tap as the Duke Fame’s manager.
