He could have been. It is such a long time ago that I don’t remember that much about it, and there have been a few other campaigns in the last 50 years.

This has been my view ever since; sadly it seems that today, less and less think or care about it.

Cyclist Dean Woods RIP 55

Yep, sadly had cancer.
Tributes are flowing for Olympic gold medal-winning cyclist Dean Woods OAM, who has died at the age of 55 after a battle with cancer.
Woods, from Wangaratta in Victoria’s northeast, was part of the four-man 4000m team pursuit team with Michael Grenda, Kevin Nichols and Michael Turtur that upset hosts USA for gold at the 1984 Los Angeles Games.
He then took three more medals across his career, including silver in the individual pursuit and bronze in the team pursuit at Seoul 1988, plus bronze at Atlanta 1996.

The image of him shaking his head and saying “Nah. Mate” as G Chappell instructed Trevor to bowl the final delivery of the game underarm is what defined him for me. Hard but fair.

He and his brother Graham were a great source of pride in Armadale where they came from and I grew up in when I was a kid.
Rod Marsh was my.first cricketing hero…RIP Marshy.

If the selectors had made the experienced Marsh captain instead of K Hughes, things would have turned out better for both Hughes and the team. D Lillee held it against Hughes and made sure that Hughes never had the team’s full support. Marsh was a brilliant player but equally brilliant captain as evidenced by his record as WA captain.

Hughes is an arrogant, private school, pretty-boy Liberal party type with whom I disagree on almost every imaginable topic.
The day he protected Graham Yallop from Graham Dilley as if it was Jim Higgs…any decent person would have walked down the wicket and used his bat in such a way that Hughes couldn’t.

Any keeper that could keep to Lillee and Thommo in full cry was always going to be remembered as one of the very best. And Rod Marsh was that. A great competitor, an excellent cricketer and person … and a true Aussie.

He retired just as a started to really get into it. I remember the WSC ads and he was a feature. Don’t think he was the greatest administrator but it’s small bickies compared to the aura and mystique he and Chappelli and Lillie gave Australian cricket.
His son Dan had a fair bit to do with the rise of Tassie cricket 20 years back and skippered the maiden (yuh) Pura cup win.
This one hurts a bit today.
