In order to keep their premiership hopes alive they have been able to add Cameron and Dangerfield who are/were top 5 players when they arrived. They were added to a squad that had already tasted premiership victory with good pieces already in place (e.g. Hawkins, Selwood, Duncan etc.).
Now I think they are in danger of having to rebuild through the draft; which Scott says they won’t do; as their recent additions are no way near the level of Cameron and Dangerfield and both of these are now over 30.
The argument originally was that we would be better off dropping Wright and retaining Caddy. It’s not about Caddy’s size - we all know he is okay. It’s about playing Caddy instead of Wright - won’t work.
Until such time as we replace Wright as our main forward and find another larger sized player to play alongside Caddy, we probably aren’t winning a final, let along a flag.
Wright has never led hard. Nor has he consistently halved contests.
He wilts like an autumn leaf. Was very pleasing to see the hostility in the crowd towards him and Jones on Sunday. Effort was conditional/unacceptable from both of them.
Would be good to see Essendon develop a ruthless streak against the lesser sides, but that’s not in their DNA at the moment. What is a notable, is their capacity to lift against top teams and / or teams they’ve had trouble with in the past.
By coincidence or design, 2024 has been “kind” to the EFC. The schedule, day breaks, the form of other teams have conspired to put the club in a strong position with 9 h&a games remaining. The team have done their bit, of which supporters should be proud.
Expect Essendon to sharpen their focus for the upcoming stretch of 4 games.
Commentary that Essendon are lucky to be in the top 4 is infuriating. With that in mind, the team needs big scalps starting with the Cats who are chronically out of form losing 6 of the last 7.
Chris Scott will cut and run and take a truckload of money at Tassie.
They’ll be ■■■■ for a long time after that.
Other than being gift wrapped just about the best list ever by Bomber Thompson, since then just 1 flag in 13 years is pretty meh for a side with such generational talents like Hawkins Cameron Dangerfield and Selwood and the biggest home ground advantage in the league.
Interesting queries over Longmire
gifted premiership contending side from Paul Roos, helped him win his first flag.
Since made more grand finals but fell short.
Propped up by academy concessions. Does Sydney have the winning edge?
It definetly feels this year is race to premiership 17 Carlton and Collingwood are right in the mix, and Essendon are too so far in ladder position, but lack being able to close out the back end of seasons and finals experience, more of a sleeping giant.
A win this week would help build belief, even if Cats are falling off a cliff and missing players.
