Is…is that Edgar Allan Poe as your avatar?
And you’re calling this place gloomy…
You’re in the wrong place.
Yes, @wimmera1 it certainly is Poe. I enjoy the optimism and humour in his work.
I am yet to read a true poster who “hates Essendon”. No one comes to a forum and posts passionately if they don’t care about this footy club.
I also haven’t heard many posters “hate the coach”… there are some who believe he is not the right man for the job but agree he is a top bloke.
I rarely see posts that “hate the players”… plenty of posts that discuss the merits of a players abilities or place in the team, which is not a reflection of the player as a person but rather judging them from a football perspective.
So you have come to a place for supporters of a club that is 17 years removed from not just its last premiership but 13 years from its last finals win and over a decade since relevancy. You have come to a place where there are a wide range of opinions on the topic of our club and football in general. Not all of those opinions will be positive nor are they all negative.
So “what’s happening” is what should have happened 10 years ago… fans have had enough of watching the same routine and, well at least some of them, are expressing their displeasure at the current state of affairs. Due to their LOVE of the Club… they want improvement. I wish it didn’t have to descend into the happy clapper vs gloomers debate but such is life. What I do take umbrage at is the suggestion that any poster, whether I agree with them or not, is not a ‘true fan’ etc etc… we all love EFC and no one should ever have that questioned.
Beautifully expressed and a thoughtful post. Thank you.
I hated Chapman towards the end.
Also hated the idea of using a draft pick on Cooney.
Why? Why shouldn’t it be questioned? We question lots of stuff. People’s efforts and will. Their commitment. Their values. Even their manhood is questioned. What makes you think that forum posters are above that? Particularly on a fan site?
It shouldn’t be questioned because it is inflammatory and serves no purpose other than to drag any thread into a debate over things such as how many years they have been a member, how many events they attend or how many cold and rainy days they sat through at Windy Hill.
I believe a forum should be the expression of ideas and opinions, not personal attacks and deriding other posters. However that is just my view on it.
I realise that for some posters to “love” the club means to blindly accept all things, to remain positive even in the face of overwhelming evidence and poor performance and to nod in agreement to any and all suggestions. For me personally, I don’t think blind obedience is “love”. I think we all support the club in different ways…
I am very confident that no one, absolutely no one, comes on a fan forum and spends multiple hours of their life debating the merits of a game plan (good or bad) unless they a) really love the club and b) are invested in its success.
I agree with this. But I extend that philosophy to others outside this forum as well. Is that so bizzare?
‘Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary…’
You are in the right place
I don’t find it bizarre but sadly it is increasingly rare to find this in the modern world. I believe the internet has allowed people to use language that is inflammatory through to insulting with impunity. What would have resulted in a heated, but honest, discussion with a “agree to disagree” nod to finish… is now dragged into a barrage of insults such as calling posters “childish” or “psychotic”.
I often wonder whether they would speak the same way in person. I have, unsurprisingly, had many a long long long conversation about football with a wide range of people. Sometimes we have agreed and sometimes we have not… but I have never had them personally insult me or use derogatory language.
Respect is a lost art imho. To respect a person who does not share your views is hard but ultimately the true test of your integrity.
Over many a quaint and curious volume of lost or winning scores…
I could amend bleak December to bleak September but that might be going too far
Presently my soul grew stronger; hesitating then no longer
I am aware, but have those worked? Every year for way too long performances like these have been happening.
Interesting point about our draw… every game from round 4 to round 7 our opponents have at least 1 day more rest leading in to the game
Maybe the silent message from Woosha is, Hooker when you see the game being lost, take yourself down back and send someone forward. That way if it fails, I won’t get blamed.
Not impossible!
Stick to beers then.
Tipped 'em. But tipped the crows as well last night.
