Was it Chapman that remarked how casual and unprofessional Essendon seemed compared to Geelong?
He probably got the same “yes but we’re a big vic club with 16 flags and lots of members” everyone else gets.

Myers must “Pay the fine”
Ah, distinctly I remember it was in the bleak September;
And each separate dying ember wrought its ghost upon the turf.
Eagerly I wished the Cricket to start; vainly I had sought to borrow
From my books surcease of Essington — Essington for the lost Langford
For the rare and radiant Nat Fyfe type whom the angels name Langford
Nameless here for evermore.
And the shrill, sad, uncertain blowing of each Nicholls whistle
Thrilled me—filled me with fantastic terrors never felt before;
So that now, to still the intake of my valium, I stood repeating
“’Tis some depth player entreating entrance at the selection table door
Some late change entreating entrance at the selection table door;
This it is and nothing more.”
Presently my panic dollars exchange rate grew stronger; hesitating then no longer,
“Midfielder,” said I, “or Half-Back Flanker, truly your forgiveness I implore;
But the fact is I was tweaking the game plan, and so gently you came rapping,
And so faintly you played in the VFL, tapping at my selection table door,
That I scarce was sure you were still on the list” — here I opened wide the door; —
Essington there and nothing more.
Deep into that Essington peering, long I stood there wondering, fearing,
Doubting, dreaming dreams no head coach ever dared to dream before;
But the silence was unbroken, and the stillness gave no token,
And the only word there spoken was the whispered word, “Langford?”
This I whispered, and an echo murmured back the word, “Langford” —
Merely this and nothing more.
A bit rich considering how Chapman approached the 2015 season and was ignoring club’s advice in the lead up to some games. But yes, there’s only so many times you can say we are a big club despite not achieving anything in the last 17 years.
Are you saying we should “push the boundaries”?
Excellent work A+
I think just about the worst thing, for this club, this list, would be to focus on the short term, at the expense of the medium term picture. That was what effectively happened last year. It didn’t pay dividends.
I’m not sure what the best move would be, but I think the risk of paying out 1 year of a coach is worth running, if it means the list is developed right.
Congrats Matty a week too late for
My liking but glad you are in this week
Hooker back
Stringer forward
Fantasia midfield
Do it!!
I have never rated Brown, looks so laconic how he approaches his football, like he doesn’t care or coasts at half pace.
He is very frustrating to watch. Similar frustration as watching Henneman
Footy is a week to week proposition.
Expect the unexpected
Edgar Allan @Westing_Wuckman, this is an excellent parody of Poe’s poem. It gave me chuckles of delight, and grim smiles at the Essington humour. The Langford references are little gems. You have done a fine job of capturing the spirit of the club as it attempts to climb out of its long, grinding, shameful slump. It reads as if you had a great deal of fun writing it.
Much appreciated. Thank you.
Blitzdown odds at $1.25 at 4pm Sunday?
@Riolio do you still have Reimers mode?
One of the best things I’ve read on Blitz. You win a thousand internets.
I have been trying to collate the factors that decide whether Essendon will win or lose.
Essendon will never win under the following circumstances:
1/ Playing interstate (mental block)
2/ The week after playing interstate (travel sickness)
3/ The week after a strong win against a highly rated opponent (feted in the media, big heads)
4/ Playing a lowly rated opponent (trying to coast)
Essendon will often win when:
1/ They have been canned in the media all week (backs to the wall nothing to lose)
2/ Playing a stronger opponent but not too strong, expected to lose (as above)
On the last point, there are some opponents who are too strong no matter what - I would put the current Richmond team in that category.
Can anyone add any more?
Nope
I’ll take a piece of that
Essendon will never win:
5/ In wet weather
6/ A milestone game
7/ Twice in a season against Carlton
Gonna smash Port today, i almost feel sorry for them.
By making only 1 compulsory change Woosha has basically given them all one more chance, i reckon they will come out breathing fire.
The last time we beat Carlton twice in a season, our coach wasn’t our coach the next year.
In fact, there are two other recent seasons when they didn’t beat us (one was a win a draw and the other we only played them once for 1 win) and on both of those occasions the coach didn’t survive either.
…the Woosha haters will be hoping we beat them twice I reckon.
