Climate Change in Australia (Part 2)

A bit intellectual for me. :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes::hear_no_evil::stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

Crazy stuff going on in Europe the past week or so. Serious fires in Portugal and flooding in Italy now to add the many countries already flooded.

Not just floods in Italy, there is flooding across Central Europe, with particular concerns about the Elbe.

We are planning a house renovation.
Is there any special preparation work that needs to be incorporated into our Reno plans now to accommodate the following installations after the Reno?
I don’t think there is, apart from phase 3 power for the car charger, but just want to be sure before we do anything.

  1. Solar panels (on a corrugated iron roof)
  2. Battery storage for the solar panels
  3. Battery car charger 3. Note. I don’t have an electric car now but am thinking about getting one.

Heat pumps possibly, but if you go full battery / electric you might not go down this path.

Hopefully blitz can provide some input here.

I would plan your equipment to charge an EV when you upgrade down the track. You don’t need to build it all up front, but having something you can plug new modules into will prevent you having to scrap solar equipment in the future.

3-phase power?
Zappi (car charger) has sister appliances like heat pump and a hub to handle it all.

The Minister Allegedly For The Environment approved three massive coalmine expansions today, out to 2060. Claimed that she had no discretion under the act to block fossil fuel developments on climate grounds. Deliberately ignored the fact that she is, y’know, the fkg government and they have stonewalled multiple attempts by the Teals and Greens to fix that state of affairs.

Not even coking coal, fkg thermal coal. And the ALP are allegedly supposed to be the more environmentally-friendly major party. Makes you despair.

Unless you already have 3 phase coming into the property or you need it for some work you do, it is not that necessary for EV. However get you Sprky to run a 32A line direct to the garage, these EV chargers are more than good enough.

The center of the hurricane – where the most dangerous winds are – is expected to make landfall around Apalachicola on Thursday evening. But its fearsome eye is only part of the story.

Hurricane Helene will grow into a massive, sprawling monster as it tracks north – one that won’t just slam Florida, but also much of the Southeast.

Thousands of Florida residents have already been forced to evacuate and nearly the entire state is under alerts as the storm threatens to unleash flooding rainfall, damaging winds and life-threatening storm surge.

The National Weather Service in Tallahassee described the storm surge threat for Apalachee Bay as “catastrophic and/or potentially unsurvivable” in an update Wednesday.

I’m just numb to it now, which isn’t great, but the capitalist machine can’t be stopped. Its got its hooks in everything. We are in a vehicle speeding towards a cliff with no brakes. May as well enjoy the view as we go.

If it was mined elsewhere in the world, perhaps it would be lower quality coal and worse for the environment. State governments probably like the Royalty revenue too, would be hard to wean off.

It does seem more like a liberal thing to do - approve coal mines than labor. Then if both major parties support it, what can you do.

Definitely worried about losing blue collar votes in the lead up to the coming election. The Libs are so far detached from reality on the enviroment that Labour can be a bit dodge and still get the climate vote.

well they will at least get the Green preferences anyway.

Why the hype for hybrid cars will not last

Fully electric vehicles will win the race

From the Economist

Hybrids are “winning now, but bevs will win eventually”, reckons Patrick Hummel of ubs, a bank. Xavier Smith of AlphaSense, a consultancy, thinks the obsession carmakers currently have with hybrids will prove short-sighted. Those that lose focus on electrification could soon fall behind

Rules in California, adopted by 16 other American states, stipulate that by 2035 only 20% of the new vehicles sold by carmakers can be plug-in hybrids; the remainder must be [fully electric

The EU plans to slam the brakes on even harder: the bloc will ban the sale of all cars that run on petrol engines, including hybrids, by 2035.

Norway is now up to 94.3% EV dominance. There’s legitimate headwinds on EV roll out elsewhere, but if Norway can shift to effectively fully electric they are proof that the issues are very solvable.

The words “generational change” relating to climate events now relates to a generation of mayflies.

I really can’t understand how people don’t get excited about storage.

Storage is great for the consumer. It means that energy can be bought cheaply when there’s not enough grid demand and sold back into the grid when demand is high.

Storage is not so awesome for generators, who make most of their margin when demand exceeds supply and prices spike.

It reduces the amplitude of the price curve and should result in lower and more predictable pricing.

Even if you don’t believe in climate science you should love storage.

This is but a drop in the ocean as to the devastation across multiple states, the damage bill is going to be several billions you would think. And they’re putting people in gaol for 2 years for throwing soup at a ■■■■■■■ painting. Us stupid, greedy apes are going to see a lot of this now as we wait for the Black Friday sales.

Oh, and there is a good chance there will be another hurricane next week in the same region.
