Modern Japan is built on a seismic crack of fire. Mt. Etna, Mt. Vesuvius wiped out Romans time and time again. The Ganges and Changjiang (Yangtze) swept away millions of souls over the millennia.

Part of the reason people built their initially is due to the flood risk, land was cheap.
The homes most at risk should be moved on and the homes bulldozed. and turned into a park.
Those in higher areas, could decide to stay…That would probably mean buying back all the land closest to the river that is flood prone.
It doesn’t need to happen straight away, but something to work towards.
I do get your opinion though, some people are happy to take on the risk. Just reduce the risk somewhat.

Except all those farkwits who will say “Why weren’t we warned about this?” - especially those driving their oversized cars back to their air-conditioned McMansions.
Of course, back then, once in 100 years floods weren’t once every 5 years, or less.
I feel like we are not too far away from Ben Elton’s prediction in Stark, where teens start wearing ‘Fark The Planet’ t-shirts, because they cynically know everything is too far gone.
Or as Bart put it, ‘…this planet is doomed. You’re just making sure we spend our last days using inferior products."
Another data centre to tell us what, exactly? How our rampant and still increasing energy use has farked the planet? Great.

I guess some people are going to find out the hard way that the economy is a subset of the environment.
And the rest of the people are going to find out that they will be lumbered with paying the bill - not the multinational companies that caused all this and have spent hundreds of millions over decades actively denying their role in it.
