Climate Change in Australia (Part 2)

An older piece I’ve just come across

A physicist and climate skeptic was paid money by the Kochs to debunk climate change. He performs the required research and changes his mind.

The irony of course being that he did do his own research rather than just his own reading and selective Sky News / YouTube watching. @Bomber1408 could take heed. And he WaS FUndEd bY thE ELiteS

My favourite part is thst it’s not sourced, no references to any peer reviewed scientific articles.

Prefer google scholar to YouTube personally

Nothing wrong with reviewing information that informs

Except when it’s clearly produced by idiots.

The thesis is that I’m supposed to believe NASA on Milankovitch cycles that gradually change the climate on a 40000 year cycle but I’m not supposed to believe NASA’s data showing that global mean ocean temperatures are rising at a dramatic and problematic rate?

Jeez, I’m surprised NASA has never addressed the interaction between climate and Milankovitch cycles.

Oh, wait, they have.

Of course, the most interesting thing about this youtube vid is what it says about the current state of the denialist campaign and mindset. We’re blessed (?) here on blitz having a resident denier so that we can observe its behaviour in the wild, and we can draw conclusions on that. The NASA page i linked to is from 2020, and therefore it was primarily aimed at debunking the denialist bullshit from 2020. So it’s talking about how Milankovitch cycles aren’t responsible for the current observable warming because (among other reasons) currently we’re on a (very very slow) cooling Milankovitch phase.

The 2023 version of the denialist bullshit, however, has evolved somewhat. It’s reluctantly accepted (without actually admitting it) that the ‘Milankovitch causes warming!’ line its been spinning for years was a pack of lies, and has now evolved onto ‘Milankovitch cooling will kill us all UNLESS fossil fuels can warm the earth to save us!’

This is how you know it’s propaganda. In a few years, they’ve gone from arguing that Milankovitch directly causes global warming, to arguing that Milankovitch directly causes dangerous cooling. Black is white and night is day. The only vaguely consistent part of the argument is the end point - that nothing should be done to reduce emissions and address AGW. And that’s because these are dishonest people pushing dishonest arguments, where truth and science don’t matter and only (depending on their personal perspective) the fossil fuel industry and/or owning the lefties is the real goal.

Occam’s razor suggests he’s an idiot or a shill

Thats not what the video said

This video does a great job of putting into context the current phase of warming, while explaining precisely why it’s something to be very concerned about

I was subconsciously thinking it would be a linear progression towards 1.5 and beyond, but the exponential nature of climate change has really hit me like a tonne of bricks the last couple of months. Have we reached a tipping point? It certainly feels like it. Records aren’t just being broken, they are being smashed. It still feels unreal that this is happening now.

Depends on the definition of „tipping point,“ as we’ve already crossed several points over the past decade or so with varying levels of consequential implications.

The recent spate of extreme weather events should be deeply concerning for all but the most stubborn of denialists. What we’ve seen this year falls far beyond the scope of what can be considered as „naturally occurring.“

It’s mid-September and here in Germany we’ve had a week of humid 30 degree days which is set to continue into next week. Today brings some needed rain but it’s still uncomfortably humid.

Furthermore and more broadly, the thesis is that you’re supposed to believe climatologists when they say the Earth’s climate has changed in the past but you’re not supposed to believe climatologists when they say the current rate of warming is artificial and harmful

I meant it in a broader sense. It feels like we hurtling towards a cliff at a rate that can’t be stopped now, no matter what we do.

My wife was in Hamburg a few weeks ago for her work and she mentioned how sticky it was a few times.

And when the permafrost melts, progression will get even faster.

Its not artificial. Fluctuations in Co2 happen naturally on our planet. The Co2 we are releasing used to live in the atmosphere previously in all likelihood, so its being recycled
