OK so these guys from Lancaster University say the New coronavirus has an R value of 3.8 with confidence of 0.95. That’s bad.

They also say: “…Our model suggests that travel restrictions from and to Wuhan city are unlikely to be effective in halting transmission across China; with a 99% effective reduction in travel, the size of the epidemic outside of Wuhan may only be reduced by 24.9% on 4 February…”

Their model may be wrong, but it seems this is quite serious, in that unlike ebola, where victims die quickly after the virus can be transmitted, this corona virus can be transmitted in the 14 days the patients show no symptoms.

China is likely to down play this. No one trusts them.

I think they may have initially played it down but they are getting very concerned now. Probably should shut down all flights in and out of the country though.
I’ve got a short trip to Shanghai booked in April with Cathay and they have already made contact to let me know they will waive any cancellation fees. At this stage I’ll play it by ear and wait

My kids godmother is an epidemiologist and caught up today. She was unusually confident about the Chinese government who she said had learned a shitload since SARS. She also said the mortality rate wasn’t much higher than a nasty flu season once you take into account the amount of people who wouldn’t have even reported symptoms
