The reasons why we don’t have a influenza vaccine are that it’s a family of constantly evolving viruses that a one size fits all approach won’t work for, and secondly a lack of social, political and economic will to eliminate it
lulwut?
I had an influenza vaccination 6-7 weeks ago.
Sorry, I meant an effective one that covers all strains
Nor should anyone. Expert the other day said even if they do make one, it may only provide perhaps not even full immunity, and then maybe only for 3 months, … that it is appearing now that even those that get the Virus only have about the same, and are able to get re infected easily afterwards. And she again reminded that it is like the Common cold, and we have never developed herd immunity for that, and never found an effective vaccine, and it was far more likely than not, that Covid will end up being exactly the same.
Haven’t seen this anywhere but my brother reckons the sewerage at Perisher has tested positive so it looks like anyone that has been there in the last few weeks will need to be tested and isolated
That’s still miles better than what we have produced against SARS viruses (aka nothing)
Some of that is because funding dried up for SARS/MERS etc when they petered out.
That’s what I’m referring to. You can manage outbreaks far more effective with any sort of barrier to the spread that takes human impulse out it
Exactly, a SARS vaccine didn’t have the funding nor the global focus CoVid 19 has. It’s not apples with apples comparing the two
From fairly early on a lot of immunologists were saying similar (ie it’ll become like an aggressive form of the seasonal flu).
As bad as it sounds, if that’s the case then at least it’s a virus with a >20% case fatality rate and similar infection rate as we’d be royally screwed.
Viruses with that high a fatality rate generally don’t spread like this one.
If the virus kills the host, it minimizes the chance to pass it on to another. Ebola is a good example of this.
It’s a way different environment to what it was 4 months ago at the very beginning of all this. These chicks were reportedly in town knocking off $7k Louis Vuitton bags with fake identification in case they got caught, and now they’re too ■■■■■■■ stupid to understand the importance of sharing their movements with people trying to stop the spread of this thing. That’s the difference.
Yeah that’s a good point.
Wonder if left unchecked some mutant virus that can replicate/spread really quickly but takes ages to kill the host would ever develop.
In the middle of summer in Texas, everyone is inside wearing jumpers because of the over the top air-conditioning. (Speaking from personal experience of Houston.) No one is outside, rather inside, and spread inside seems to be worse.
Coupled with the idiotic Republican governor responses, not sure they are good comparisons.
There was still a couple of years put into it without much success.
And WHO stated they didn’t expect a vaccine until mid-2021 at the earliest.
If whatever pandemic plan the government is working off/on doesn’t include the possibility that there won’t be a vaccine for years (if we ever get one) then imo it’s a flawed plan (and this extends to COVID or any other virus/bacteria).
Do you really thing we’d be in that much of a better position if our “infectious” population was 15mil instead of 22mil?
Just hope that Covid doen’t mutate like the flu strains, where vaccines are ineffective for certain strains, in cicumstancrx of greater contagion risks and health effects more dangerous than flu.
For those thinking that a vaccine is the silver bullet I posted this article earlier today.
I don’t think a vaccine will be seen for some time if at all
Testing people who have visited Perisher may be redundant. An antibody test may be the best option.
