The circle of life is almost complete:

81 new, this is the stubborn tail of the virus.

Still too high but good positive ratio today

Reconciliation process has complexities and it is still ongoing.

Now all states are using the new death reporting requirements

20 or fewer HCW infections per day, good but still not good enough.

Qtn: how many HCW are flowing onto families. Low, as the hotels for hero’s programme is being used to mitigate this. (Rich)

10/15 % of figures are still Health Care related

Wouldn’t be happy to open up on today’s figures

What a surprise! Alex/Rachel - why are the death reporting so poor, that’s caused the reconciliation?
Rules changed and now going back thur everything. This are the accurate ones.
But, dhhs stuffed up… Dispute this
Worked with Comm with this. Data transmission is daily and frequent.

Dan says…

50 deaths from July Aug
6 yesterday
3 last couple of days

Wonder what the Alex/Rachel agenda is ? Why the focus on the death rate? They are obsessed.

Qtn: how can Vics be sure that you are telling the truth with the death rate? Ffs

Death certificate must be signed and Vic must be held responsible. Nope, GPS can sign death certificate too and they aren’t Vic controlled.

Doesn’t matter the lengths that Sutton and Dan go to in explaining the reconciliation of Covid deaths, the journos won’t revise their reporting

The level of testing in Regional Vic is solid. Always encourage people to come forward but they are going okay.

Any symptoms - get tested

Multiple actions are taking place the help reconciliation including birth, deaths and marriages data.
Process of reconciliation takes time and ensures we are getting it right today when we say the data.

The cases are not tracking well, should be reducing by 5/10 per day, but it isn’t.

Hume Brimbank Wyndham still not great

Construction qtn: Sunday is when you get more info when we do the roadmap.

Many different opinions but National Cabinet aim is ‘National Suppression’.

Dan says…

Nick: do business actually get the danger of opening early?

Yep, businesses want to get themselves back on track, but yes, they understand the challenge of opening only for a few weeks and then back into the yo yo. Covid normal must be for months and months.

Industries where there were no transmissions before, can they open up? We are looking at the whole, not the individual parts. It’s the combined movements that need to be factored in.

Not going to comment on National Cabinet - please direct questions to the chair.

Any messages for those wanting to attend the protest?
Don’t.

Journo misrepresents that people are being arrested for posting views on Facebook - the arrest is for incitement to an illegal protest

Better numbers today.

Story is already written. Just want a quote to pad out the word count.

Alex/Rachel: views on protest, individual cases and VicPol? Ask VicPol

Rachel : should Colbeck be sacked? Not going to comment other than he has worked with us to keep Aged Care people safe.
Rachel: why is Colbeck taking the heat, you should, due to hotel quarantine? He has been supportive of us and he has worked well with us.
Rachel: Whose responsibility is the aged care deaths? Let’s beat the virus and avoid tragedy in the future.

Male journo says (us lay people) are having trouble understanding the death reconciliation. (really - I get it?). it’s been complex and now with the clarification of the rules , it’s being sorted out now.
Male journo: but we are all confused… (I’m not)

Child in Vic has develop the inflammatory illness (rare). More common in boys than girls.

Without intending to minimise what those in aged care, health care and disability care are going through, being down to 700-ish active cases outside those sectors is very encouraging.

Nice to put a face to a name finally. Now please shut the ■■■■ up Rachel and Alex.

Proportionally hasn’t really changed a heap. Has always represented about half active cases. Throws into focus how bad the aged care/HCW situation had gotten.

Need those numbers down further.

I’m probably late to the party but what’s with the big push in conducting more tests? The big problem with this virus is that so many are asymptomatic so they are likely to never get tested. So just what is the stated aim of having more people tested?

To me this feels a bit like footballers chipping the ball around the backline to pass out their stats.

A symptomatic testing is done in aged care, health care and meat works.

Ref: still in .8 zone. At the moment, we need to follow the case numbers.

Burnett institute of decentralised contact tracing - yep, worth exploring for metro Melb but it has already being done for Regional.

Bench mark for Contact Tracing is being done already and reported to National .

Aged care mortality is between 25% to 33%

“I don’t understand how people can think about let it run”. Coronavirus is extremely serious. Yes, during flu season 1 or 2 people may die in an aged care facility. With Coronavirus, it’s 20/30% of the facility.

Reff around 0.8, doesn’t leave a lot of room for much easing. Perhaps to stage 3, but we are going to sit there a while. We just can’t afford for it to get above 1 again.

Thanks very much, see you tomorrow…

That is very frustrating.

With ~3000 active cases and a ref of 0.8 it’s still going to take ages to get to really low numbers.
Especially when daily drop in cases you’d imagine would be inversely exponential.

Been brought up by someone else, but it’s a bit of a worry that we might be in a scenario where transmission amongst “essential” workers can’t physically be dropped to a level low enough to get cases to where gov wants to be able to ease restrictions.

It’ll be low in HCW’s in hospital etc, but the Aged Care cases could go on for months as those in residents will not recover quickly (those that do actually recover…).
