Creative solution for next Premiership

So you are the Head recruiter at Essendon in July 2015. Paul Little has come to you and said his expectations are that the club is aiming for a premiership window in 2019.
What are your next steps? What process do you take immediately to address the current playing list while looking into the future?

What is your draft strategy next 3 years? Who are you looking to elevate?

B baguley Hooker Hurley
Hb Hibberd Carlisle Goddard
C Zaharakis Watson Fantasia
Hf Edwards Mckernan Colyer
F Langford Daniher Dempsey
R Bellchamber Heppell zerett
Int Myers Hocking Stanton
Laverde

Emg gleeson jerrett Gwilt

Thats my best 22 for next year.
Means keeping bellchambers and carlisle but not on silly money.
Would look at trading experienced players outside of best 22.
ie cooney, howlett, melksham if anyone was interested.
Think nob maybe contracted but kav let go.

Will lose fletcher chappy and winders but not a huge loss as they have barely played this year.

Need to draft or trade in key tall depth
Hopefully select a young gun mid with first pick
Would like to rookie a developing ruck

1. Offer Todd Goldstein $900,000 2. Offer Patrick Dangerfield more 3. Offer Jack Gunston a shiteload

Build a Team around them, and Heppell, Hurley, Hooker, Joe Dan, Zerrett, Colyer, Laverde, Langford, Edwards, Bags, Pig, Jobe, BJ, Cooney.

Hope you’re never our list manager. You’d have a team like a beginner on supercoach where they stack up on 5-6 big guns and then fill the rest with a bunch of cheap kids so they can fit into the salary cap.

Three players not 6, and we need a ruckman, midfield grunt and a mobile forward.

Are you telling me that you wouldn’t want those three in your team.

Being ruthless with who remain on the list.
Trade out for early picks.
Modern (whatever that means), progressive coach.

After years of misses is it time for Dodoro to go? Mind you, his team seem to have recruited well of late.

It's not so much about not wanting those three, it's more to do with not being able to pay other decent players to compliment them. Unless you are Sydney.

I reckon Gunston is way overrated, and would struggle in a sh*t team.

If I’m loading up $ to fix our team I’m not spending it on a 3rd tall. Goldstein and Dangerfield is a great start, then more gun mids.

Mero, other than one pre-draft priority pick, what advantage did Collingwood have?
Being allowed to draft-tamper with Ball?
Plus Cloke under the old FS rules.
And Shaw

If smalls don’t come on in 3 years, get rid of them
If talls don’t come on in 4 years, get rid of them

Recruit the jet midfielders we were promised was #1 priority after 2001 GF.

Not creative, been done before: play the 18 year old Fletcher kid at full-back.

(Thanks for nominating 2019 in particular!)

You say “why wait so long, we’re set for a flag next year”.

(only partly joking. Will actually answer the question when I have time to think about it)

The fact that that is actually a possibility is nothing short of extraordinary.

Four elements are the difference between contenders and premiers imo- footskills, goal kicking, marking and tackling.

Along with a good game place (which I assume will be incorporate) invest in specialist coaches to spend time with all players to get them to a high standard.

Skills- 70% Game plan- 30%

Give GC our first pick for prestia or Bennell, trade tbell for 2nd Rnd pick. Go after majak daw or zac Smith to play as no. 1 ruck. Trade demps and kav for what ever we can, possibly nothing. Maybe throw in a 3rd selection to try and get a pick upgrade. look at second round pick offers for myers. See if howlett and hocking attract any interest. Aim for 3 picks in the 20s and Prestia/Bennell - daw/smith.

Break the mold with a daw/smack ruck combo and stack the side with pace around a hepp, jobe Prestia engine room.

You said creative, and I haven’t seen enough of daw as no. 1 ruck to have any idea of whether this has any merit at all.

Oh keep the spine together

You make tough decisions

  1. Who will be Captain of the team in 2019? Heppell? Make him captain now (sorry Jobe)

  2. Go through your list, mark out who will occupy a spot in this team (ie in or around peak age and/or occupying a key position). These are non-negotiables. Everyone else is on the table. Get trades done, but cap age of recruits at 24 - no more Chapman/Cooney type topping up. Pick off a GWS kid near enough but not getting a game if we can (one who was a high draft pick, not a zoning recruit like Aylett)

  3. Identify key FA targets who will be in their prime for 2019 and fill a need where found in step 2. Plan cap space for these purchases in advance.

Recruiting - fast, endurance athletes. We’ve seen with Colyer how damaging pace is, we want more. Suggest we also look at those only who have AFL ready bodies so that can start playing from season 1. Undersized skinny guys are taking too long to be ready. Our recruits from the next two drafts to be in the 50-100 game range by 2019

I feel like I’m stating the obvious here… let me come back with some out of the box thoughts…

Daw is great (for a 195cm ruckman… ie easily outpointed by actual ruckmen)

For about 2 minutes.
Then he blows up.

And you have to either sub him out for an actual real footballer or just cope with a guy who can’t run any more.

For serious: career average 7 disposals 2.5 marks 5.7 hitouts. Subbed out 6 times (I think once from an injury) from 15 games. And this is his sixth year on a list. Ain’t gunna happen.
Weirdly, one of his games he kicked 6 goals from 8 marks (18 disposals). Why on earth you’d persist with him as a ruckman after that??

A cutting edge supplements program

Fair enough. What has happened to Dan currie
