The only 2 new young bats we actually picked for the series have been our 2 leading run scorers for the series. Even the much-maligned Labuschagne looked decent in his only opportunity.
They’ve certainly outperformed the experience of the 30+ers: SMarsh, Paine, Finch and Khawaja.
Yeah but after Harris, Pucovski has the highest individual score in shield cricket this season.
And Harris is actually doing alright.
Pucovski is only 20.
If he is fit why not give him a taste. couldnt be any worse than selecting Marsh.
Tendulkar debuted as a 16 year old.
Daniel Vettori as a 18 year old
Ponting 20
I don’t think anyone is concerned by his age, however he had time out due to mental health issues, putting him into the Aus team may be the worst case for him at this time.
I still don’t understand why they overlooked Burns for Finch for that openers spot, mindboggling.
I was impressed with Harris and Labuschagne’s intent, they weren’t batting ‘scared’ like some of the more experienced players and both looked to have well-rounded techniques (with a few obvious weaknesses). I like the idea of a leg-spinning option against the Poms. With Warner coming back and Khawaja entrenched in the top 3 Harris looks the front-runner for the other opening slot, I think the current selectors like having a Left/Right opening combo which may force Harris out or down the order to 5 or 6.
As much as I’d like Handscomb to come good, I just don’t see it happening and with Smith coming back he is odds-on to make way for him. Maxwell would have been an upgrade on Peter in almost every facet; better in the field, equal to if not better against spin, better against the quicks, and he gives a bowling option to the captain
I was mixed with Trav Head, he was good but he didn’t dispell any of the knocks on him - namely his shot selection/Test temperament and his scoring off spin. They’ll take him to England but I think he’ll be carrying the drinks, at least at the beginning of the tour.
Certainly in areas trying to stop singles and the outfield, but Handscombe has his measure around the bat and in the slips. I’d have them pretty equal in terms of their fielding abilities.
We would have won the 1st test if it wasn’t for stupid virtue-signalling “hey it’s all the players’ fault” suspensions; and we did win the 2nd test. India do look a better team but we had to shoot ourselves in the foot for them to win their 1st test series in Oz. So the blame game among commentators, officials etc is exaggerated.
We do have a lack of depth of quality batters but there is some elite talent coming through, so we’ll cobble together an international level top 6 soon.
I think we saw a weakness in our bowling in Oz which was unexpected. We do need a 5th bowler, as we can’t risk prematurely ending the careers of Starc and Cummins from over use.
True about the slip fielding and the bat-pad stuff. Our team is missing a genuine run-out fielder inside the circle at the moment, India gave us a few half chances in both Melbourne and Sydney in batting friendly conditions, it’s super important to cash in on those chances
Ponting’s immediate success has contributed to our batting woes imo, he has muddied everyone’s expectations about a young guys ability to play at test level, as a result, we have rushed kids in before their time or placed massive expectations on them.
